hey guys i got a quick question. from what ive read IBA is made up of a few components. there is an outer shell and then the plates. the outer shell will stop 9mm and with the addition of the plates they will stop 7.62 rounds. is that correct? item he mentions that there is no kevlar or ceramic plates. so is this just an over priced chest rig? what do you guys think? thanks |
Correct. The item for sale is the fabric carrier, which offers no protection. There appears to be no armor for sale there. The level of protection afforded by the Kevlar soft armor panels or the ceramic plates is dependent on the panels and plates themselves. Before buying a protective garment, you'll do yourself a very great (perhaps life-saving) favor by researching what's available and choosing based on your situation and needs. I mean no disrespect to you at all, I just hate to see anybody make a less than ideal choice in a matter where the right answer is so critical. Best of luck in your search. |

thanks for the reply guys. if its just the outer shell i think im going to pass. i would like it to at least have the 9mm protection if im going to spend that much. im not using it for combat (if i was id buy the best i could) its merely in the price range of other vests ive been looking at. |

You do realize that this is very likely stolen US property. Point Blank sold VERY limited quantities of these IBAs to civies and the majority on the market including one that has been admitedly to Iraq (assuming he is telling the truth) has probably been stolen, Uncle SAM is not reseling these as surplus, you can do the math here. CID is investigating this stuff all the time, I would highly recommend stearing clear of IBA's on the market. cp |
wrong.... tons of IBA's were surplused through the drmo system. i have one. |
"tons" ? I am sorry but I have to question that. DRMO at FT. Knox and at Wright Patterson AFB told me personally whe I visited last year, that "NO IBA's or personal protective body armor, would be redistributed through DRMO because it is considered a "sensitive item" and if unservicable, would be destroyed. If servicable, Armor would be re issued or used in a way beneficial to the Mission." Not an exact quote but he was reading from a regulation best I could tell. (this was read from a regualtion book on site by a Mr. Toller DRMO facility manager Ft. Knox Ky. DRMO). I am assuming from that statement that means it could be redistributed and used in other capacities such as ballistic blankets or seat covers or whatever. The reason is simple for this they dont want surplus vest ending up in the hands of terrorists here or overseas. duh. Then again I guess things could have change and he could have been full of sh*t, but I doubt it. who knows???? cp |

He wasn't BSing you. Body armor is not supposed to be allowed into the DRMO because they are classed as sensitive items. It MIGHT be possible that some law enforcement agencies got some via DRMO (since it might be loosely said to be "furtherance of the mission". Why so hot in the IBA? There are better options that offer equal or better protection, and don't carry the possibility of being stolen or missing the DRMO process. According to the documents, armor isn't supposed to be available through the DRMO, or at least to civilians. I know that DoD "donated" lots of K-Pots to LE agencies, so perhaps those vests were intended for similar grants. |
