I'm ready to upgrade my hearing protection and trying to find a honest impartial comparison is tough to find. I don't want to skimp on hearing protection and the Pro-Ears series is available locally to me. Any thoughts on whether these qualify as a quality set of muffs? I like the full automatic gain control along with the 1.7 ms response time and 5 year warranty. Other than that I just don't know.

Thanks to all.

I have two:  one Sporting Clays and one Magnum.  IMO they do not work as advertised.  I can't hear normal speech while gunfire is going on.  As the ProEars are rather expensive, I'd save the cash and buy a less expensive model like the ones offered by Dillon.

We have a pair that's been sent back to the factory three times, and they still don't work right.

I have had a set of Pro-Ears Dimension 1's.  They seem to work good and I can still hear speech while the amplification is turned up.  Things I do not like about them 1) Funky batteries, yeah sure you can carry a spare set but not every gas station is going to stock them.  2) Battery compartment is inside the ear cup.  The batteries kept falling out when I had the muffs in my range bag, the only thing holding them (the batteries) in is a thin peice of foam.  3) They are not waterproof.  I shoot in the rain and this was a big deal. 4) The dimension 1's do not have a cut out to accomidate shouldering a rifle.  5) Knobs turn themselves on in your rangebag, this isn't that big of a issue as the batteries often fall out.

I ended up giving the Pro-Ears to my dad and buying a pair of MSA Soridin Pro-X muffs.  Low profile, rifle stock cut out, auto-off, water-proof, takes AAA batteries, and very comfortable with the gel insert.  Best $250 ever spent.

[ Hi Jack On ]

I’m curious too…

I’ve purchased these from SureFire, but have not given them any range time, maybe one here can comment on them?

All of the above is true.  Batteries tend to fall out.  I've used a pair of dimension 1's for about five years.  I lost the sound on one side, but Pro Ears did the right thing and replaced them with no problem.
I like the fact that they are adjustable for sensativity.  All in all I like them.  When it comes time to replace them, I'll look for some of the newer Pro Ears so I can get a better cheek weld.

I've heard the pro ears are nice.  I've had a pair of MSA Sordin Supreme Pro-X's for about 6 months.  They replaced a set of Peltors that broke after 14 months.  I love the Sordins.  The sound attenuation is instantaneous and you can carry on a normal conversation while doing a mag dump.  The battery life is better than any other muffs I've seen or owned.  They're waterproof and have a lower profile than the Pro Ears or Peltors.

My only gripe is the seals are vinyl/plastic and not as comfy as the leather ones like the pro ears come with.  They also get hot in the south Georgia summer.  I'm going to order some gel padded seals and cotton sweat covers that'll remedy this though.  I don't think the sordins sound reduction rating is as high as the pro ears.

The surefire ear plugs work great.  They are very very comfortable and stay where you put them.
