So, I just bought a new set of Propper brand 100% cotton ripstop BDUs in Asian Tiger Stripe.  Are there any special recommendations for washing BDUs?  I was wondering about scent, UV, IR (my BDUs don't have the mil-spec NIR technology, but I've been under the impression that certain detergents can make IR detection worse).

Anyway, I'd like to know what 'the hive' thinks about this.

There should be a care tag in the pants someplace (how to launder)... failing that, turn them inside out to wash and use cold water.

Laundry Detergents for use wth the Army ACU
List of detergents that do and do not contain optical brighteners
Posted Sunday, April 9, 2006

To the best of our knowledge the list below represents the laundry detergents which do not contain optical brighteners and are able to be used with the ACU (Army Combat Uniform). If you find that one of the below listed detergents are not applicable to a specific category (approved / unapproved) please send an email to [email protected] so that we may change the list.

Most detergents do not list if they contain "optical brighteners" so it is difficult to state for sure if a detergent is able to be used to launder the ACU unless the company is contacted directly.

Thats cool of you to post that everytime BB868 for folks.

I will add that if you turn your Camo inside out for the wash your colors will last a lot longer.

Also as has already been pointed out Line Dry rocks.

Woohoo!

Thank you Air Force.

That Army list is like 4 years old now, I'm glad the AF stepped up and filled in more of the blanks.

What about fabric softeners?

They should be avoided as they may affect the NIR properties of the garments.
