Any advice?  Emphasis on CHEAP and any DIY ideas are welcome.

1) Buy another pack other than an ALICE

2) Helps to specify what sort of "mod"?

I do have a eberlstock gunslinger but as alice packs are so common I own one as well as do many of my friends but i was just looking for some upgrades that would make it more comfortable, ergonomic, or whatever just anything you feel makes it better.

it's your equipment, your spine, and not to get too grandiose about it, possibly your life.

Save your pennies, be patient, do your research, and buy a pack other than an ALICE.

Worst. Pack. Ever.

Reading is fundamental, boys.
Tactical Tailor does lots of ALICE mods
For what it's worth, here's the link. It seems most of the mods are to allow the pack to carry more stuff...

The main things needed for the pack are a set of DAMN GOOD shoulder straps and an appropriate waist belt.

get 2 sets of fastex buckles and make some adapters for the top closure.

It seems the trend of oppinions has again swayed....Sometime people lile the ALICE System and the CPF 90 is the POS and now it is just the other way around here.

I had the 90 with a patrol pack and really didn't find it user friendly but I still have my old Large Alice with a few TT Upgrades.

Tactical Tailor Super Straps and Waist Belt are a HUGE Improvement over the flimsy USGI straps.

A few other things I have planned at TT are to add the Storm flap, reinforce stress points, carry handle, Fastex Buckle Upgrade and possibly a Claymore Pouch on top for stuff I want fast.

the problem lies in ergonomics, the ALICE pack utilizes a design concept that hasnt much changed since the 40's and unfortunately most of the problem lies in the FRAME.  This external frame setup is a single length and does not allow for proper wear and fit to the users torso length.  SO in the interim, we PACK more padding, which does nothing but delay the loading, impairs wearability and maligns the balance of the pack vs. the users mobility.

combine that with the variability of stitching between vendors and you'll have issues abounding.  Yes Tactailor does do modifications, but for the total cost of modification, you'd be better off just buying a MALICE pack if you're hardup for an ALICE platform.

that being said - get an HSGI ALIPAD  - I have found this system to be rather helpful in partial mitigation  of suspension (increase in load carrying ability too) - but its not a be-all/end-all solution.

of all of the potential modifications to the green life-sucking leech that is the ALICE, your best overall CATCH22 bet is a set of thicker shoulder straps and kidney pad with a beefy waist belt, and if possible, reinforcement of ALL internal seams.  But this in turn runs counter to your initial requirement of CHEAP.  You're looking between 40-100$ depending on degree of changes.
