Pretty simple, lookin for a vest for my fat ass. I don't need something super fancy or tactical. Just something with a cross draw, hold some AR mags, extra pockets/pouches, etc. etc. Just to give an idea, 2x t-shirts are tight, 3x is usually what I wear, and 4x is nice and baggy. |
| I doubt most of the vests have enough adjustment to go very large. The Tactical Tailor MAV and the SOTech Hellcat have tons of adjustment. The Eagle Rhodesian chest rig doesn't have as much adjustment as those two but I'm pretty sure it will go large enough for you. |
The irony is that I quit going to the gym when my legs got too big for any jeans to fit over them. As it is now I still have to buy pants a couple waist sizes too big and wear a belt. Don't get me wrong, I'm no model of fitness by any means, but I am a large framed guy. |
|
I'm with you, I could use some gym time. BUT even at my current weight (275 lbs) I still sink in the water. I have a 42 waist and a 52 jacket size due to my shoulders not my gut! I maintained the 275 even playing racketball for 2 hours a day. I got the CTD vest that holds soft panels. It just fits me with no overlap. I squeeze into 2x and am comfortable in 3x shirts so it should be similar for you. Just my 2 cents. |

Husky Tactical Vest that fits up to a 60" waist (I think a 4x) www.wiskur.com/tactical-vests.html wiskur |

CROSSFIT and yeah I am 280 and can STILL fit in an XL Eagle Land CIRAS with plates and softs. I concur with the weight loss and working out bit - Try scuba diving... getting out of the comfort/ho-ho zone... you'll also meet more chicks than you'd know what to do with. |
Same problem here. The calfs of my legs are muscled like crazy and regular jeans don't fit over them. I can't hardly find any boots that fit because up at the calf, they're too damned tight. Now, since I quit going to the gym, my gut is catching up to my pant size. I bought a bowflex to work out at home, but my frame is just "husky". |
|
First off, I concur that you should get out of the comfort zone, if you eat junk food and fast food all the time, my advice is you don't and if you drink soda all the time, you shouldn't. This is just my advice and if you do these things and stopped, ate healthier and hardly exercised, you'd still probably lose a lot of weight. I'm not even saying to eat less...just healthier and a more balanced diet. As for a vest, you may be more satisfied with a chestrig. I've noticed a lot of chestrigs seem to have a lot more adjustment in them vs. a vest. |

You guys crack me up. I appreciate all the info on vests and will have to sit down and research them to see if any will work. But all the fitness advice is honestly putting a smirk on my face. Its all good advice but I laugh at how this started as a vest thread to working out and ditching the snacks. :) Just for the record, I'm on my feet all day at work, 50 hours a week. Most the time spent at least walking and sometimes walking fast and moving stuff around. Its by no means a fast paced heart workout but I am moving all day and staying busy. Especially once summer hits, it gets crazy busy at my work. I drink lots of water and a gallon or two of nonfat milk everyday. If I have to drink something out of a can I usually go for iced tea or something. Still a lot of sugar but not as bad as pop. I usually eat a bagel and some kind of small snack for breakfast, snack a little through out the day, a medium lunch of whatever is available at work and quick, and then a decent dinner. I'm not anti sugar/candy by any means but I don't eat crap food all day. If I see candy and it sounds good at that moment I won't hesitate to eat a piece but I'm not like these peeps who mow down on that shit. |
There is a fine line between offering friendly and helpful advice and being self righteous and insulting. Despite the fact that he and others may have some excess weight does not give you the right to call them a fat ass. Do you walk down the street and slap a cheese burger out of a fat person's hands and spit on a lit cigarette while someone is smoking it and shoot a hippie because they're smoking pot?...okay, maybe the last one is fine but still... What I'm trying to say is that getting upset and insulting people won't exactly win them over. |
|
All insults aside, you'd be better served to carry your shit in your pockets and lose the weight than be fat in a vest. Let's be honest here: unless your hobby is simply "collecting the stuff of warriors", you're deluding yourself if you think that you will be effective, or even useful, grossly overweight. If the S did H the F, you'd be more of a liability than a benefit. |

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that if someone is overweight and wants to be effective in a combat situation, it is advisable to get into better shape. I do also concur that 1-2 gallons of milk a day is excessive. I'm working on putting ON weight and I drink 2-4 glasses per day...if I can stomach it. I'm also agreeing that someone who is overweight or out of shape should worry about health and conditioning before gear. What I do not agree with is someone who chooses to express their views, no matter what views they may be, with directly insulting terminology, specifically when they are a member of this community and, unless deemed a non-stop troll, inherently a comrade. ETA: The reason this concerns me is that I have noticed more and more direct insults on these boards recently and despite the fact that I am not even a contributing member (will be when I have more funds), much less a Mod, I do not want to see ANYTHING in my community turn into a mud slinging contest. Whether I agree with someone on here or not, you will never see me lose respect for a fellow member in my words and you will certainly never see me directly insult a fellow member. Sorry to go off topic but I felt it needed to be said. |
Mate, plenty of members here, ESPECIALLY from GD, are complete assholes. You could save 10 retards from a burning building, and they'd still rag on you for not knifing a commie en route to the scene. Don't act surprised. I personally don't view this as a community at all, fwiw. |
Maybe you just don't talk to the right people. I was mentioning the increased number of insults and such. I know what you're saying but what's worse, the man who does something wrong or the man who sits idly by that could make efforts to stop it.

I'm pretty sure that the "fatass" comment was a constructive endeavor, albeit probably offensive, an attempt to redirect the OP's priorities toward fitness for the betterment of the OP, and one could argue, the US as a whole. I dunno...I'm just saying that given usual ARFcom standards of etiquitte I'm surprised that the post wasn't more scathing. |
Russ, you are right, though. your post was well written, and made me rethink my attitude. I apologize to Jake, and anyone else for the way I wrote my post. Mine was a crappy job of getting a point across, in a thread where my opinion had no value to the OP or the thread. If I think I'm smart enough to give my opinions, I hope I'm also smart enough to know when I've been an ass. This was one of those times. Sorry, guys! |
|
Ha, this is great. For starters, I don't really consider myself a fat guy, just an easy and humorous way to title the thread. None of you who have replied know me personally so let me help paint you a picture. Think less white lazy fat guy and more 6'1" Hawaiin/samoan lookin dude with real broad shoulders. Do I have a gut, yes. Could I stand to loose it, yes. Am I so big that I'm not active, no. I've got giant thighs and legs that are solid as can be. My arms are bigger than average and solid. I'm just a large framed guy. Any of you who think you've offended me, you haven't. I am twice the size of either of my parents and have been since middle school when I started hittin the gym. As far as the milk thing, I've been drinking milk like crazy since I was young. I love the shit and count all the milk calories you want, there isn't much better of a beverage for ya other than water. I've done some crazy shit in my time, takin some hard falls, and done things that should have broken bones on a normal sized person, and I've never broken a bone so there is something to be said for drinking milk there. Like most people here I am looking at a vest and other gear full on knowing I'll never need it for any kind of battle. Honestly I was just looking for a vest for Practical Rifle matches and such. I live in a rural town on lots of land and if for some reason I have to trek across the property it would be nice to have a vest with all the goodies also. Not so much for enemy persons, but just in cases in wild animals and such. But you never know, might run into a person someday. And don't worry, if my health ever became that big of an issue I'd have no problem admitting it and asking for help. I doubt I'd come here for that kind of help but I would find the right place. A good place to start would probably be my little brother who is a strenght and conditioning coach for the Seattle Seahawks. |
|
Oh, and I might as well add this. "I'm not fat, I'm a minitrucker." Those of you in the scene will understand that. Those who aren't it doesn't matter. And for those who care so much about my milk intake, I am almost out so for the last hour I've been drinking nothing but water while cleaning my new varminter. |
See...now...he's not a member of this community...so... Probably spends all of his time on airsoft boards or ebay buying plastic guns. That's not even a joke.
|
I was going to say the same. I'm not just talking out of my ass either, I went from wearing 3x-4x shirts and breaking buttons on size 44 Khakis (Which I'm sure were already larger than their marked size) to wearing size L shirts and slim fitting 34 waist jeans by losing close to 100 pounds. I did it in a bit over a year, if you're dedicated it can easily be done. I recommend weight watchers and a bicycle, and a YMCA membership. Then join the military to further get you in shape. |
|
Im 5'11" 250lbs and wear a XL... sometimes an XXL if I want something loose. I may not be the picture of health but I do more work than most people (I'm a brick mason)... I've hired 20yr old guys who cant stand but to work for a day or two (and im talkn about those barrel chested gym king sonofabitches) where we are. Just my .02, GMB |
And I gave an honest opinion about a vest too. I stated that he may be better served with a chest rig vs. a vest because most chest rigs offer far greater adjustability.
|
| Maybe I just don't know enough about chest rigs to really understand them. I've seen pics of them but I guess never a pic of someone wearing one loaded up. Seems that they would ride up kinda high, like chest level or maybe a little lower. Am I correct cause if so it seems that they would be real intrusive. |
| It depends on which one you get. Here's some from SKD Tactical. LINKY! With these, it depends on how you adjust the straps that cross behind your neck as to where it rides. Here's some less expensive ones that you can try from Cheaper Than Dirt. LINKY! And there's always something like this plate carrier. It is connected by a strap on either side. May have enough adjustment to accommodate your size. LINKY! Good luck. |
