Staying Dry So, I’m in Oregon, and you might have heard, it rains here from time to time. Curious what you all use to stay dry when out and about (range, matches, hunting etc.) Was also wondering if the US military poncho is worth getting. They’re inexpensive, but I don’t know how dry they’ll keep me. Your thoughts. Pics. Thanks. |

1. The military poncho is a true piece of shit. 2. The old military rain gear was worse, because they leaked AND they were hot. Military ECWCS gear, especially the jacket, was the most outstanding piece of clothing I've ever purchased. Well worth replacing the M65 jacket that I never wore, even on active duty. That said, there are some great civvy setups using post-patent Gore-Tex knockoffs and even the real stuff. Check out your hunting and fishing store (Gander Mtn, Cabelas, etc.). |

I have GI rain pants & jacket in woodland camo, that being said, a GI poncho & liner is aka a ranger bed roll, also can be used to build shelter, also can be used to make jerky, also gather rain for drinking water. Also a poncho help keep you dry, also your gear and back pack, did I mention it also helps keep you weapons and ammo dry? Pant and jacket? ![]() TG |
| For keeping myself dry it's hard to beat the goretex jacket and pants. If camping or planning on staying outside, a tarp or poncho is nice to have because as mentioned, you can build a shelter half or place it on your gear. They limit mobility and make a lot of noise, but they have their uses. |
