OK, all joke about kneepads aside, anybody have any good recommendations about kneepads?  I have never used external kneepads, just the foam inserts.  I really don't know what to look for or what advantages some might have over others.  I would like a nice set though.

I wasn't expecting to get such a unanimous response.  Looks like I will be getting a pair.

Alta with buckles, I waited months getting them from some "tactical supply" place, you can usually buy them at Lowes. The ones I eventually got from LIght-er I mean the tactical supply place had a picture of a guy installing carpet on them.

+1 on SKD and another +1 on the Altas, by far the most comfortable .. no binding behind the knee.

I used a pair of Altas on a few AC system installs in low crawl spaces and the elastic bands were VERY uncomfortable. They rubbed raw spots in the back of my knees. I ended up ditching them and wearing ACU style pants with foam inserts in the knees.

BTW, what are you planning on using them for?

I really like the KneePro Ultra Flex III

I've used these - they stay put and are very, very comfortable.

edit... I didn't even see TwistedMonkey's post... looks like I'm not the only one who likes them.

General military use.  I would like to wear them next weapons training I go on, and then use them as needed for tech work.

They may work better for you, but the Altas I had pinched the hell out of my legs behind my knees. I tried them twice and the results were the same. Now, I was using them in crawl spaces for extended periods, so maybe they are ok for light use, but at that point I think the foam inserts would work just as well.

you can always cross the straps if the bunching bothers you.

I have used the Altas with great success, but, this year, I am going to try something a little different.

This year, I am going to return to Camden, TN for another go at Tactical Response's HRCC course. Instead of using the Alta pads, I will use hockey shin guard/knee pads under my pant legs.

90% of the course is in/around vehicles...getting in and out repeatedly under stress. Last year, I banged-up my shins a lot. For this year, I first was going to try soccer shin pads and keep the Altas on the outside for my knees. While I was mulling over this, I was cleaning up the garage and came across my son's roller-hockey gear and was inspired to use the shin/knee combo.

I will still take my Altas, but, hopefully, I won't need them.

I'll post a report.

i was gonna say hockey pads are very bulky and are taped on.  rollerhockey ones would be like those swat shinguards they sell.

No experience shooting with them, but I've been on my knees, laying brick patios for 5hrs plus at a time, in a pair I got from Lowes.  I seem to recall them being just a tad over $20 for 2 pairs, pretty dang comfy too.  Though after 5 patios this summer the foam is sorta shot and compressed to all hell.  But for the price they're more or less a throw away after a summer for me.

These are them.  And I wore shorts all summer so these were on bare skin.

I have been one to always caution folks that when choosing pads, always select ones with a hard plastic shell. I say this because when using pads in a firearms environment, you always run the risk of kneeling down on an upright shell casing. I know the all-foam ones are comfy, but, they won't protect you from sharps on the ground.

The ones I linked have a plastic cup on them....they're good enough I'd imagine for your average range jocky and may suffice for some civi training if you are looking to save a few bucks.

The KPs get my vote too.  Some of the guys that have them had issues with the joints squeaking when new...a little CLP and no more squeaks.  Mine have never squeaked.

I've run Altas, which were too bulky and the Hatch neoprene pads withc make you sweat like a mofo.
