One of the many things learned at SHOT show in Orlando this last week, is that Multicam is becoming a bit more available than it ever has been. Propper International has a Multicam BDU line (in the ACU style cut and pockets), as well as Gore-Tex jacket and pants becoming available in March or April…good stuff, and made in the USA. I’m not a big fan of Tru-Spec BDU’s (they’re thick and heavy, and they fade in the washer/dryer), but they’ll be making Multicam, too. If you haven’t messed with this camo, it is good stuff. With that said, I spoke with the skateboarder kids (they dressed like a group of thrashers) at Crye Precision’s booth and we had a long dialogue. To make it short, I told them that they’re dropping the ball on production of this great camo and that your average SWAT cop isn’t going to buy a $200 shirt and $150 pair of BDU pants…..if I spend that much, I’m wearing them to my next wedding. Honestly, who is going to risk ripping them or getting dirty? Their new style pants are very nice, but again, very expensive. VJ |
So what did the company reps say about your pricing gripes? |
"We're still looking at getting in more orders for current products so that we can do larger orders." That just strikes me as odd. They have good ideas for updated pockets, elastic where I've never seen it, but damn, who can afford it at their prices? The youngsters they had at the booth remind me of a group of college kids starting up a .com organization ... messy hair, nerdish types wearing CRYE t-shirts ... I wasn't overly impressed. I don't confess to know how CRYE works, if they are bigger than they let on or whatever, but that was my impression. |
Those young guys ARE Crye, not just some reps the company sent. And they are excellent designers with revolutionary ideas. Good quality, made in the USA products aren't inexpensive. |
I'm sure they are good designers...their pant designs are excellent, however that doesn't make me any more impressed with their appearance or the ability to market Multicam to a large audience. From the large number of folks that are now picking up the Multicam line of camo within their own companies, I don't see CRYE moving ahead very far. Propper and Tru-Spec will squash them, just by sheer volume of production and lower prices. |
