| What are the new designs, and where can I buy one new? Thanks! |
|
One new design is the Warrior from Specialty Defense Systems (SDS) and if you have $618.70 then you can buy it right off their website. http://secure.specialtydefense.com/cgi-bin/sds/index.html Their 3 point chinstrap ($13.00) is a great upgrade for anyone still using the 2 point chinstrap. |
The new generation of ballistic helmets include the MICH/ACH Helmet:![]() My helmet, purchased from the local surplus shop. ![]() My helmet, completed, with a Rhino NVG Mount and the Goggle retention straps (not shown in this angle). Not my helmet, but is the same layout. These helmets range in price from $200 to $450, depending on what you can find on eBay; manufacturers include MSA Gallet, Gentex, RBR and SDS. THey provide the best available ballistic protection while maintaining excellet periferal vbision and you can use them while wearing radio headsets, like the Hi-Threat MBTRs. Older PASGT helmets can be upgraded by using the BLSS system from Oregon Aero (they make the suspension system for the MICH/ACH helmet), though you might want to do some researtch on the manufacture date on the PASGT helmets, older helmets might not provide the same ballistic protection as newer made ones (though I cannot confirm this). All it takes is a little research and some surplus store hunting; I sure have found lots of good stuff there for little cash. Check my topic on the MICH Helmet that I bought: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=10&t=199377 Good luck.

Me neither; most of the stuff I own was purchased from surplus stores, who get their stocks from DRMO auctions (www.govliquidation.com); I wouldn't approve of buying stolen stuff.
I think it does, but I cannot prove it; all I know is from heresay. |

I dont think PAGST helmets decompose with age, also kevlar vest panels. Their has been test done on ones 25yrs & older, they passed. Kevlar vest panels, if it was abused, their known to fail. www.bulletproofme.com/index.shtml TG |

The latest Army issue is the MICH/ACH. Made by three makers, the main difference are in the suspension. The lateast Marine helmet is the lightweight Kevlar with the same profile as the older PASGT. The Army's ACH is trimmer, and gives about an inch less cover in the back of the head. Kevlar doesn't degrade just from age, but you can't quite be sure how it was treated in those years. UV light (like sunlight) will weaken Kevlar as will improper maintenence. Bleach is a no no, and will almost deatroy it. |
PASGT Helmets are good, but they can be uncomfortable as hell, specially if you don't put a foam "donut" on it; you'll end up with a mad case of "Helmet Head"; I strongly advise you invest in an Oregon Aero BLSS System for PASGT Helmets. It upgrades the shitty suspension system on it and gives it the same one on the MICH. It is the same system used by the Marines on their Lightweight Kevlar Helmets and I have heard nothing but praise from Marines in the field. I think is about the best thing you can do to the PASGT Helmet. |
as usual, nobody makes stuff for XL helmets. I got a huge melon |
All military issue gear comes in two sizes: Too Large Too Small Seriously, the MICH comes in two (or three??) shell sizes and various sized pads to achieve desired fit. |
