Can you mod gear? Well, yes. Go register at Lightfighter.net and check out the "Roll your own" forum where that kind of stuff is done all the time. Will it save you money? No especially in this case. Gear modding is very time consuming and expensive, and you need a commercial grade sewing machine like a Juki to do it right ($500+ sewing machines). You will end up breaking the wife's sewing machine, and she'll get pissed at you. Your best bet is to sell the vest on the Equipment Exchange and purcahse a Blackhawk vest taht has the mag pouches on both sides (they make them in that configuration). It will cost a lot less money and save a lot of time. Plus you can get it in the color you want instead of black. Spray paint works fine on tactical gear- it will wear off eventually, and will smell "painty" for a week or two but is a cheap solution to get the color or pattern you want. It is much easier to camo a lighter color piece of gear (khaki) than a darker piece of gear (dark green) and black is damn near impossible to color. Once again, if you have black and want gree/woodland/khaki, go seel the current gear and just buy it in the apporpriate color and save yourself a lot of trouble. Krylon camo spray paints are available at pretty much every big store that has spray paint (Meijer, any hardware store, etc.) and is cheap and works prety well. From what I have heard it does refelct IR, which makes it less effective aginst night vision, but that is about the only downside to painting. A lot of nylon and buckles reflect IR light and show up wellin night vision anyhow, so it isn't really a big deal. Dawg |
Eggroll builds gear for a living (or as a second job) and is very active over at Lightfighter.net. He will be the first one to tell you that it is cheaper and faster to find someting pre-made that meets your needs than to try to custom build it (although if you want to learn A LOT about gear, building it is a great way to do that). |
