This is something that generally overlook since I wear the foam ones at the range along with the muffs, but in a tactical environment I usually didnt wear anything except for one convoy where the unit I was supporting mandated it for IEDs.  Id like to find something very compact that will allow me to hold a normal conversation and hear things like footsteps and bolts locking and such, but will muffle out sounds like 105 shells going off next to your truck when youre driving down the road.  The combat earplugs being issued seem to work ok for this job, but I can only wear them for short periods of time as they are too big for my ear canals.  Id like to find some kind of headset or a set of electronic earplugs that might be also used with a PRC or motorola.  Any suggestions?

Peltor Tac6 S.

slim, runs on AAA batteries and they sip power.

batteries are kinda hard to get to, i just made sure that i had fresh ones loaded before i left the wire.

oh yeah, they fit fine under a MICH.

if you need an idea of something to order for your unit, ask for Gentech or Bose headsets, when our connexes get back i'll yank mine out and look for the NSN.  Gentech and Bose both have a behind-the-neck configuration and they both lash into an existing "Charlie" intercom box so you can keep your earpro while you use the radio.  they both have Vox and PTT functions as well.  i prefer the Gentech sets for comfort and functionality.  Bose has slightly better sound though.  These two headsets use AA batteries to power their noise cutout systems.

Peltor ComTacs are great for use with a MBITR, just like the Tac6 S... only with a flexible mike so you can talk.  It also has a PTT function.

I've been using a set of Peltor Tactical 6S for about 8 years (same pair) and have had no problems.  Plus the price has come down on them, an all around good deal.

I've had my Peltor ComTacs for a couple of years now and haven't had any problems with them. Keep in mind that I only use them at the range though. I can hear better than normal with the volume turned up.

The Sordin/MSA Supreme has come out on top of every comparison I has seen.  They have great sound quality, the cutout is fast and without clicking.  They run for a long time on TWO AAA batteries.  The best part is that the electronics are waterproof.

I have ruined three pair of Peltor TAC 6s over the last 10 years with moisture.  Once from shooting in heavy rain, and twice with sweat.  The moisture gets behind the foam ear pads and is right into the electronics.  If you get them wet/sweaty you have to remove the ear pads and foam liner and let them dry out.

Both will fit under a MICH, but the Sordin/MSA's will not fit under an older K-pot very well.

Good news is that the Peltor TAC6s are cheap, like $69.95.
Bad news is that the Sordin/MSA Supreme Pro's are not, $237.95.

Check them out with the MISC Shooting Gear at Triad.
