Hey all,
I have an 870 express combo that came with a rifled deer barrel and a bird barrel.  I'm going to be taking this out hunting and was looking down the deer barrel (detatched from the shotgun ;) and it does not look rifled to me.  This is probably 20 years old and also comes with choke tubes but I think the choke tubes are for the bird barrel.  I have a few questions...

1. How do I verify that the barrel is actually rifled?  I have other rifled barrels and you can usually see definite lines in the barrel that twist.  This barrel does not show these lines.
2. What happens if I shoot slugs through this barrel and it's not rifled?
3. What happens if I shoot rifled slugs through this barrel and it is rifled? (I'm assuming this will be a very bad day for me and the gun).
4. What would be the recommended replacement rifled barrel for this shotgun?

UPDATE: So upon further inspection, both barrels take choke tubes.  The set came with three choke tubes, one is rifled the other two are not.  Would it be the case that the expected rifling for the deer barrel would come from the rifled choke?

Thanks all.

Does the “deer barrel” have rifle sights? Is that barrel threaded for screw in choke tubes?  Remington has marketed a lot of “deer barrels” and “slug barrels” with sights that are NOT rifled. There are intended for “rifled slugs” (the lead slugs has grooves on their outside)

How do I verify that the barrel is actually rifled? I have other rifled barrels and you can usually see definite lines in the barrel that twist. This barrel does not show these lines.

If the barrel is rifled you should be able to see and feel the lands and grooves.

What happens if I shoot slugs through this barrel and it's not rifled?

That is not a problem. “Rifled slugs” are designed to be shot in smoothbore barrels. Slugs with a sabot are designed for rifled barrel. Their accuracy may not be the best in a smoothbore barrel but there is no danger in shooting them.

Not really. The slugs may lead more residue for you to clean out the barrel.

What would be the recommended replacement rifled barrel for this shotgun?

Find a Remington Rifled barrel.  Here is one example
