Slug preference varies just like any other load. My rifle sighted IC choked 870 mag likes plain old Winchester slugs just fine. Sighted in at 50 yds it's dead to POA and cloverleafs 1oz holes. I put Truglo steel sights on it because they were finer than the Remington rifle sights and they're fiber optic. It shocks my friends when I can hit headshots on a B27 at range freestanding. It really likes the PDX1 loads too although the pattern opens up a little more on the slug with that and you get 3 more double aught holes too! My 1100 with the slug barrel on it really likes the cheap Herter's slugs so each gun is gonna like what it likes, you just have to test. Remington Sluggers have worked fine too getting 3" groups.

my  21" M1S90 with light modified Briley choke will hold 3" groups at 60yds with both Fiocchi Aero 7/8oz low recoil and Federal Premium 1oz low recoil... sights are 10/22 flip up milled into the rail and triangular HiViz flashpoint front....

I've had good results with Federal Tru-Ball.  Zeroed at 50 yards.

As noted, slugs, like any other ammo, can be very individual gun related.

And it depends on for what you want the slugs. Hunting? Target shooting? Tac shotgun/3gun matches (also target shooting)?

I have the most experience with the last one, so will address that (for hunting I typically use full-power Win Super-X 2-3/4" slugs just for more oomph over low recoil slugs and because I bought several cases for cheap years back - don't see the need for 3" slugs in my neck of the woods).

The typical 3gun answer is the Fiocchi 7/8-oz low recoil load. Rated 1300 fps, and the lighter weight gives you a pretty light recoil as expected. Out of my Saiga 12" SBS, I have it zeroed at 25 yards, it's pretty zeroed at 50 yards, and then it hits 9" low at 100 yards (the 1-oz load at 1180fps drops 12" at that range for my gun with the same sight setting). My last time verifying zero I had a 5-shot 3" group at that range with it. Don't expect any better than that out of any of my smoothbores.

I got a case of the Fed Tru-Ball low recoil stuff recently as I had a match that was calling for 50 slugs and I was a bit low on Fiocchi, so took the Tru-Ball out to check function and zero the day before the match. It was also on at 25 yards, maybe a hair high at 50 yards, and the three shots I threw downrange at 100 yards hit spot on in a 2" group. Have only grouped it that one time thus far (it was late in the day so the range was shutting down), so unsure if it will reliably group that well, and if it will consistently hit to POA at 100 yards with a 25 yard zero. Gotta get it back out, but if that in fact maintains, I have a new competition slug load. Will save me having to use holdovers for many of the targets, and less holdover for the more distant targets (don't recall having slug targets past 150 yards, and most are in the 100 yard and less range. The match the next day had really close slug targets, so I got no additional distance data).

I also alternated some Tru-Ball and Fiocchi in a magazine and had no discernable recoil difference, so if by some unexpected magic the Tru-Ball really is shooting pretty close to on all the way out to 100 I'm completely sold on that. Even if it turns out I just sighted badly on that one target, the tightness of the group is exceptional for slugs out of a smoothbore. Plus the Tru-Ball just "felt" more smoothly cycling to me. Oh, that's another reason to test various ammo in your gun before buying in bulk - some of my guns have not been happy with low recoil stuff.

So - if you just care about holes in paper, try out the various 2-3/4" low recoil loads. I and many others have had good luck with the Fiocchi 7/8oz load, but the Fed Tru-Ball is looking very promising. I just hadn't had to buy slugs since the Tru-Ball came out, so I'm late to the game trying it out.
