Bought thus cheap the other day. Just finished a deep clean and repair. The power pac compensator/choke tube was slightly bent and was missing the butt plate and magazine cap. Had a butt plate that needed just a slight trim to fit. Cut off the barrel to 20 inches and reseated the front bead. Choke tube listed on ebay this morning. It's in good shape and so smooth. Hold the muzzle skyward, hit the bolt release and the action opens by gravity. Just amazed how well made this sears sold, high standard made shotgun is. May get coated as the finish is thin. Or just leave it be. Wood is pretty sex too.

One of those is on my list. Most are C&R qualified.

Not sure how to date this kind of stuff. There is a 52 stamped bottom side of barrel next to the receiver. Could be?

Look at the model number. It will be 583.XXXXXXXX...

583 Was the Sears code for High Standard (they had multiple firearms suppliers.)

XXXXXX will be a number that typically changed every year. Or at least it did for the Model 10 (bold action tube fed shotgun.)  So a

583.1 was 12 ga, 1st year of production
583.2 was 16ga, 1st yr
583.3 was 20ga, 1st year
583.4 was 12 ga, 2nd yr
583.5 was 16 ga, 2nd year

etc.  Not sure if it worked the same for the Model 20 pump, but the resources are out there to translate JC Higgins model numbers.

Nice gun. I've had a thing for old shotguns lately myself. '30s era Stevens 620 16ga earlier this year and a 1905 Husqvarna Model 20 16ga SXS external hammer this week. I did my Stevens much like your High Standard.

Had both the trench and riot US marked stevens 620 shotguns. Sold them last year at auction.
Seems like a posted pics here a couple years ago. Great to break them down and fit in a small bag.

Great find.  I would leave it as is and shoot it a lot.  THat's basically a Highstandard pump shotgun and one of the smoothest machines out there.  I don't know how they made them so smooth but they did.   Have fun.

The deals are out there. I picked this one up for $45 about six months ago. It had light surface rust on it. I used 0000 steel wool and oil and it cleaned up well. I haven't even shot it yet.

Added sling swivels to the stock and end cap. Thinking about a trijicon front sight. May buy a cheap factory tube and make an extension.

Edit to add: The choke tube brought $30 on ebay. Boo ya.

My opinion, skip the Trijicon front sight. It's an old, classic styled pump so treat it as one. Get the biggest brass bead that Brownell's sells and drill/tap the barrel for it. That's what I do on all of mine.

Drilled and tapped the vent rib and put on the original .150 diameter bead.
May just leave it like this.
