I need some help. I got a 7-shot 500 in on a trade. It dry fired fine. Turns out, it does not actually fire fine. 
What is happening: When you pull on the trigger, it doesn't move and doesn't fire. Release the trigger and pull again...bang. 
I have pulled it apart and put it together and same thing occurs. I pull the trigger group out and it dry fires (removed from action) every time with no problems. I have not been able to try another trigger group in this gun. I do have another 500, but the front tabs on it are bigger than the tabs on this older model, so it doesn't fit. Any suggestions/options? I feel it is fixable vs replaceable, but I have no idea where to start. What is the difference in the tab sizes on the front of the trigger group? |

The safety block is not in backwards, I compared it to my other 500. I think I found the culprit, and I will test this weekend. The shotgun had a home duracoat job. It was done fairly well, so that didn't bother me. I think that the coating was too thick and allowed the back of the trigger to touch the back of the safety. I didn't think the tolerances were that close. As the trigger wore the duracoat, it made a small notch on the back of the safety. To the best of my ability, that is what was causing the trigger to 'stick'. They way I diagnosed it was to remove the barrel and bolt, reassemble the trigger assembly and operate the trigger and safety while looking into the action. You can see the trigger touching the safety with the safety off. Here is a picture of the safety. On the back edge you can see the shiny part of metal exposed from where it is rubbing. 
So far, I have smoothed it down with some fine grit sandpaper and there is a noticeable difference. Testing to occur this weekend. |
