Hello, I'm new to forums and I have a few questions about the M4. I'm getting a m4 from my late grandpa. It is unfired and I think he bought it about 10 years ago give or take. Are there any differences between one built now and say 10 years back? Any insight would be appreciated. Also, on some m4's I see a mag tube that looks ribbed. What's that about? Thanks again

Need better pics to give you more info, I can't tell if that mag tube is 5 round or 7.  Also, is there a flag on the right side of the receiver?

Not an M4. Probably a M1 or an M2.

M2 Tactical?

It looks similar. The rear sight base looks different though. I think it is a M1 Tactical due to the receiver shape near the stock.

Seems that an extended magazine tube was also installed.

Ten years ago it is probably an Heckler and Koch imported one. If so, the HK fan boys will pay a premium for it. Check the reciever for the importer name. Also, to see if it's a tactical model, it would be threaded for chokes. Non tactical models were not threaded. (I hope I don't have that backwards). The ribbed mag tube on the M4 is due to the mag tube being blocked and not a full length tube.

The M1 is one of the best semi-auto out there. Enjoy it!

Definitely an M1 Super 90 Tactical.

New HK guns would have to been no later than 1998.  If he bought it new in 2003 or so, then this is definitely a Benelli USA gun.
