I got a Savage 12 gauge from a neighbor. Grandpa's gun. Its was sitting in a closet since Truman was in office.
I'm still guessing whether its a Model 720 or 745?
I need to know which is the best recoil pad. Ouch...   Very ouch!  I shot it without a but plate.
I need to get advice on some wussy loads too. I'm just gonna use this for shooting snakes and stuff for fun.

These are what WALMART had left this weekend.  ....So I just got these.

just get a good recoil pad on it and most any 12ga. 23/4" load will feel like a wuss load if you practice youre hold and shooting tech.  nice old shotgun you got there . those are good guns if you take care of them. hth

This really hurt. Do I get the limbsaver brand?  Or there something better?

Try to find the correct most likely metal, hard natural rubber or plastic buttplate.

I got a Savage 12 gauge from a neighbor.

BTW why does it say springfield if its a savage?

I don't know why it says Springfield.  It does not say Savage anywhere on it, no model number,  nor does the barrel have a caliber engraving.

Get a limbsaver, they are universal and reduce felt recoil significantly.

Also be sure to check the friction ring settings on your gun, its similar to Browning A5 and Remington Model 11.  The friction rings arrangement affects recoil and settings for loads.  Being that yours kicks excessively on light loads may be you need to replace some parts (action & return spring) for reduced recoil.

check out the settings info on this page.

Yeah, I did have the friction ring set up for light loads. Also my brass friction ring might be worn out.
The ring slides smooth and easy around the tube.
My son found a used 12 gauge 2 3/4 shell at the range. Its seems this gold colored shell has about half the brass
at the bottom of the shell.. Maybe less gun power? Less kick?  Mine was the red one on the left.

You were shooting heavy field loads not easy trap and skeet, switch the friction ring around..  Go back to the info I sent you in your other post.  Light load setting would be for loads under 3 drams and velocity of 1200 fps and lower.  Remember they were using black powder and paper shells when JMB invited it.  Savage-Stevens-Sprinfield-Fox where all made by Savage Arms.  Just different marking and sometimes different Model number for the same gun.  Nice Hump Back by the way.  Get yourself a limbsaver pad.  Gun operates on the long recoil principle.  No markings on the barrel?  Is there any ** (astrick) marks, this could indicte choke but I'll bet that its between 18-20" cylinder bore.  Does the front have a bead at the end?  Guard guards came with a 20" cyl bore.  Any ordance proots?

Limbsaver slip-on recoil pads work quite nicely.  Measure your stock where the recoil pad would go and then consult Limbsaver's webiste to see which size to get.

Don't limp shoulder it. or it won't cycle.

With the Browning recoil operated shotguns you definately don't have to worry about not having enough recoil to operate the shotgun.

Suspended loosely from a string  I am sure they would operate 100%.

I like it. Are you going to put a bead on it or am I just missing it in the picture?

There is so much false information about how these old guns kick like a mule. This is almost always due to the springs being worn out and the friction system setup wrong. With new springs and properly setup my model 11 is one of the softest shooting guns I own. And just to prove a point about the recoil operation to a friend I dumped 8 rounds shooting from the hip. It does not have to be shouldered to operate. You set them to the heavy setting as a general rule and if it works leave it. If you have not done it replace the action spring. These are almost always worn out. Wolff makes a very good replacement spring Wolff spring

Now to add more carrying capacity

I switched the rings to heavy load configuration. I will eventually get a front sight.
