| I know a little about shotguns, but not alot. I am looking at the mossberg 590a1 and a rem 870. What i would like to so with the shotgun is HD (98%) and maybe some turkey shooting(2%). I would like to get a Shotgun Extension Tube. My question is about after market products, is the market about the same for after market parts? And any advantages to either? thanks |

It's hard to compare a 590a1 to an 870, because "870" could mean a lot of different things.
If it's an 870 police, then I would say that the 870 is a better choice (just my preference) But if it's an 870 express line gun, then the 590a1 wins. Depending on which model of 590a1 you're looking at, you may be limited on mag extensions. For instance, the 20" 9 shot already has a full length tube. As for aftermarket support, I think the 870 has a good advantage here, although there is no shortage of aftermarket parts for the mossberg. Turkey hunting with either of these HD guns may prove challenging due to their cyl bore choke. You would likely need to get a full choke to be effective. If you wanted an all around gun, then I'd look for an 870 police, then purchase a spare remchoke barrel for it so you could use it for hunting. |

The 590 is a much more purpose-built shotgun than the versatile 870. It's definitely a "fightin' shotgun" with its full-length mag tube, low-gloss finish, bayonet lug, and other no-nonsense features. I would choose it over the 870 simply because I'm left-handed and prefer the location of the safety on a Mossberg.
If you are wanting to customize a shotgun to your particular needs and likes, then an 870 is the way to go, then. |
