Just picked up and installed a 25% Reduced Power Recoil Spring from Wolff and was wondering how well the m4 would cycle 00 buck for home defense. I bought the spring so I would be able to cycle the the Walmart No 8 winchester that I shoot for two gun steel matches. When I have the shotgun at home I keep it loaded with Hornady Critical Defense buckshot and didnt know if i would running into any issues with beating up the gun running the lighter spring.

You run the risk of battering the receiver. You may also encounter some return to battery failures during cycling. The bolt carrier can get hung up on the hammer if it doesn't have enough inertia to continue forward.
Given that you're probably not going to fire that many hot loads through it anyhow, you'd probably be okay. I'd still function test it with your choice loads before trusting it though. |

Just tested 00 buck with the spring and it functioned fine but it just seemed to beat the gun up a little too much. So far i have been able to run Ferderal Target Load 3 Dram 1 1/8 OZ 7.5 shot with 100% success rate on the standard recoil spring. |
