I'm having a tough time making up my mind on a pair of Mossbergs.  I already own a 20" 590A1 and want a pistol grip shotgun, on which I intend to put a birdshead style grip.
#1) Mossberg 500 Breacher  -  This has a 14" barrel with a 4" breacher permanently attached for an overall 18.5" length.
Pros: ~$100 less than my other choice, no NFA paperwork required

Cons: Plastic trigger guard and safety, muzzle attachment is a bit goofy

#2) Mossberg 590A1 AOW  -  This also has a 14" barrel with no silly attachments.
Pros:  Heavy barrel, metal trigger guard and safety.  CDI Factor

Cons:  Costs at least $100 more, wait 6-8 months for AOW stamp to come through, need to carry paperwork wherever it goes.

I would love to build a non-AOW 14" barreled 590A1, but don't know about the availability of virgin receivers nor the specifics of the "other" process.  Any input would be appreciated.

As I understand it, if you buy your shotgun of choice in originally pistol grip only configuration, and it never has a stock installed, you're fineto chop the barrel  if you stay above 26" OAL. Easiest way to do this is with a shotgun that comes from the factory with a pistol grip only. Save the box or box endflap showing serial number and "pistol grip" where it says type of stock and keep it in a safe place for documentation that it came from the factory that way. To make sure you stay out of prison I recommend verifying that I'm right before building the gun.

#1  then, if you desire turn it into an AOW.  If you do this yourself keep in mind even though you're doing an aow the tax is still $200 to make it.   If you know a dealer/manufacturer you could pay them to register it as an aow then transfer it to you for $5 may save a few bucks doing that.

I'm too paranoid to do the over 26 inch pistol gripped shotgun/less than 18 inch barrel thing.

If I understand correctly, if Mossberg manufactured #2 above with a grip that made the OAL over 26" it would be a non-NFA firearm?  However sold as-is with the regular pistol grip, OAL is under 26" which makes it an AOW?

I mainly wanted to avoid the hassle of carrying paperwork for it, but I suspect that even if I did make a non-NFA version that every gun range & LEO who saw it would think it was illegal, thereby requiring me to carry around an ATF approval letter.
