I am in the process of reviving an old 11-48 that has been collecting dust since I bought it a couple of years ago. My intentions are to install a remington choke extension with muzzle attachment. This device would add about 2" to the length of the barrel and the shotgun overall. I understand that 18" is the minimum length allowed without a stamp (VERY familiar) but does that include the muzzle device?
Rifles seem different in that most if not all muzzle devices externally thread onto the barrel and the rifle bullet would still not contact the threads if internally threaded for a device. Shot could effectively damage/destroy the muzzle end of a shotgun with no choke or thread protection in place. Wow, I may have answered my own question. I guess that it could be assumed that the choke extension could be removed and a standard choke installed leaving the barrel short. I am not really familiar with various chokes so I don't know it the one I intend to use could be replaced with a "regular" choke. Permanently attach? I will see if I can add a pic. Wes ETA - For clarity, I am intending to cut the barrel to 17" and with the choke ext/muzzle device installed the barrel would be ~19" OAL. |

If you want the Remington chokes to be removeable than the OAL with the choke can not be involved. Barrel length would be from the shortest possible distance IE no choke installed is how ATF will measure. You can do it shorter only after you pay the tax man.

Well, the point may be moot. My smith lost his choke cutters/tools in Ike and decided that regearing @ $1000 each wasn't worth it since he did so little on shotguns. W decided to cut the choke portion off of the extension and he will bore the muzzle device to slip on to the barrel and then silver solder it on. Should be cheaper this way and less precision involved. The look will be the same, however.
Yeah, I realize my use of logic and lapse in judgement prompted this question, but I do appreciate the replies. Wes |
| This might work and allow a screw in choke tube to be used also |
