What is a good solvent that will remove the residue caused by wads in the barrel?

Nitrobenzene, dichloromethane or tetrahydrofuran.
Acetone, xylene and MEK work too.

Brownells sells a solvent just made for wadding, it works so so.  Nearly any solvent will eventually dissolve plastic wadding.  I soak it for a while with regular bore cleaner, than I use a long rod, chucked to my handrill, with a slotted tip.  I cut small strips of green pot scubbers, those nylon pads your wife probably has under the kitchen sink,  insert them into the tip and spin the rod for a couple of minutes. usually works.

Tornado brush on a rod chucked in a cordless drill with whatever solvent you normally use.  I do mine every 40,000 rounds whether they need it or not. Generally, they don't.  Plastic in the barrel doesn't hurt anything and won't affect patterns.  It mostly causes shooter's OCD to flare up.

The best maintenance you can do in the barrel is to make sure you have some kind of high temp anti seize on your removable chokes.

Don't feel bad man...I'm on the extreme end of it.  Last March I put 8,250 rounds through my 28 ga. in 3 1/2 days of shooting in Entre Rios Province, Argentina.

Under 'normal' circumstances, I shoot about 300-400 rounds per week all gauges combined.

I personally only know of one other guy that consistently throws more hulls than I do, and he's fucking nuts.

I don't know Tom Knapp.  And I don't think he's pounding out too many rounds these days.

Shooters Choice makes "Shotgun and Choke Tube Cleaner" that "quickly removes plastic wad, lead and powder fouling".

It worked great on my TAC4.
