So, after wasting Steve's time via IM from about a year ago I finally got off my duff and sent him my barrel. It was a 26-inch vent-rib Rem Choked 3 ½ inch Super mag barrel. I asked Steve to cut it down to 19-inches (something a tad different) and to remove the rib. He did so, then going above and beyond cleaned up the "sore spots" left over from the ribectomy, added some cold blue to the top of the barrel and crown and returned it all in a ridiculously short period of time. -I sent it off to RAS via Priority Mail on 7/8 -Got an IM Wednesday the 13th, said he had received it Tuesday the 12th. -Another IM on the 15th saying it was done and would ship out on the 16th. -My mail man shows up about an hour ago with it on 7/18/11 Now, I've heard great things about Steve (RAS) here on arf.com and this is my first time sending him any work, but I'll have more packed up and ready to go here in a few weeks. Thanks Steve. Dreadnought No. 2 barrel… was 26-inches with a vent-rib and Rem Choke. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1103/Monster11/shotgun/RAS01.jpg My experience as well. |

any idea how he removed the vent rib? just pried it off? or is it more involved than that? Tap a metal wedge (I use a ground down screwdriver) under the rib beside each post and the soldered area will break loose fairly easily. There will be a blob of solder stuck to the barrel at each post. File off the remaining solder then use a strip of sandpaper in a shoe shine motion to remove the file marks. You'll end up with a quarter sized area of bare metal where each rib post was attached. If the barrel has a matte finish its ready to degrease, abrasive blast across the top and those bare areas (I use 50 grit Black Diamond @ 75 PSI) and apply touch up blue. This method will blend nicely with a factory finish on a Remington Express barrel. If the barrel is a polished blue the only way to get the nice matching finish is to polish the whole barrel and hot blue it. |
