I've never owned a shotgun, or fired one, but have a pretty good collection of rifles, so though im no where near new to the world of firearms, i have no idea what im doing with this shotgun. Originally the Saiga12 was all that was on my mind, but after some long thinking and price gouging, i've decided i really cant justify the buy.

One reason is because i plan on using this rifle mainly for fun at the range and such, but i also plan on using it for hunting and home defense.

After much thought and research, the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 caught my eye, and the 870 is on top as of now.

Since i never buy a firearm and use it as is out of the box, i was hoping i could get some ideas for mods i can do on this shotgun. Is there anything i should know about it as far as performance mods, or specific tweaks for my named uses?

Here is something along the lines of what i plan on doing:

I know what the actual parts are, but i was wondering how they managed to get these on a 870. Does an 870 accept AR pistol grips?! Is there a specific version i need to buy of this to handle all the changes i want to make? Thanks.

Here is one way to get an AR grip on an 870....

The one on your link is a High Tube Adaptor, it makes the 870 on the same sight plain as an AR.

I never got the point of the mesa high tube adapter. Not that there may not be some great thing about it, I just don't know what it would be from looking at them. I am however a really big fan of blackhawk/knoxx stocks. Both the folding wire stock and the collapsable m4 style. I have both. They do an incredible job lightening recoil. I can easily shoot 3" magnum rounds with one hand using either of these stocks. They also have a great warranty if you find a way of breaking one of them.

Which is exactly what the Mesa high tube does, by making the recoil linear into the stock.

So mesa high tubes have a recoil reducing feature inside the tube? I thought they were just a way of being able to put AR style stocks at a position level to the top of the receiver.

It's not a mechanical feature like the Knoxx has.  By putting the recoil axis directly inline with the bore, it reduces the amount of felt recoil on the shooter and adds up to a more controllable weapon.

I bought Mesa's cheapest AR stock/grip adapter here a couple years back, and it was a nice piece of kit with a standard M4 stock & Hogue grup.  Would I do it again - maybe; it was fun, compact, and easy to use, but I've gone back to walnut 870P style stocks for my "go to" 870s as I like the looks & simplicity better.

A few add ons and such.  Pulls home defense duty and ran it just like this in a # Gun Match last weekend.

Mesa does offer a recoil reduction device... from their site "The Recoil Buffer reduces felt-recoil by more than 70%, making the 12 gauge tactical shotgun comfortable for all shooters"
