Just bought a new to me Benelli M3 yesterday. The semi-auto mode works fine. But in pump mode, I can chamber a round (dummy round), but the bolt does not lock forward, like say another shotgun would. I can pull the forearm back without pulling the trigger or operating any release mechanism. Is this normal? Can it fire out of battery?  The manual wasn't any help.

Its been a loooong time since I had one, but I'm going to say you're fine.  Operationally, the M3 is using the rotary locking lugs and the action spring to lock.  Since it is primarliy a semi, there is no lever locking behind the bolt.

Edit to add: given the geometry of the bolt & hammer, your chances of firing OOB are pretty much nil.

ICOPY––

If you're worried that your new M3 is malfunctioning––put your mind at ease.  It is working as designed.

The M3 doesn't lock into battery the way other (manual) pump shotguns do.

That's a relief! Thank you!
