I recently purchased my first 870 a couple of days ago. One thing I noticed when I was looking it over after I brought it home was that the pump is a little loose and has a little bit of play in it before it is "pumped" but when I load a shell into it then of course its fine. Is this normal? cant remember what it was doing when I was looking at other 870's and the mossbergs.

I hope you're loading the shell to shoot, and not to check the wiggle.  If it is to check the wiggle buy a couple of practice rounds so you don't accidently put a whole in something or someone.  Have you fired the 870?  With how the pump/racking system is designed it makes sense that you would have some play in the forend when the gun is unloaded.  But, if you're talking more that a couple (2 or 3) centimeters of travel you may want to address it.
