If I don't want to shoot 3.5"s and I am happy with 3"s, what would I be missing by getting a Urika? Also, rather than me speculating as to the differences between the Urika AP and MAX (the only thing I can piece together is that the AP comes with the kick off), what are they? Thanks! |

They are very different actions. The Urkia is a fantastic gas operated shotgun but you cannot extend the mag tube due to the gas system and the way the barrel mounts to the gun. The Extrema is based in part on the Benelli recoil system and you can extend the tube if you like.
I've owned more than 9 390 / 391's over the years as well as the original Extrema and they are both fantastic guns. However, I really wish you could extend the mag tube on the Urika..... I would LOVE to use mine for 3 gun but there is really no way I would be competitive. The extrema cycled everything I ran through it and was a great gun but I didn't like the feel of the thing compared to the 391. |

I'm not sold on the Extrema, My dad has one, my buddy has one, and my M2 will out cycle them any day of the week. Same recoil with the same load. If you want the 3.5, I'd go with an SBE, again I've only seen two Extremas but both had the same problem cycling lighter loads even with proper break in.
The extrema is still a fine gun, it just wasn't for me, and my Father's purchase only reinforced my decision. |
| The answer to your question lies in what you intend to do with it. IMHO the 390/391 series of shotguns are the very best there is period. However, the magazine tube is an issue for some. Personlly, i use mine for clay games and i only need two shots at a time. Therfore a 4-shot capacity is perfect. If you dont want to shoot 3.5" shells, I would avoid buying a shotgun designed to shoot them. Most, if not all will have problems with light skeet loads. I have seen more than a few Benelli SBE-II and Franchi I-12's fail to cycle on the skeet field with real light loads. Obviously not the guns fault, they were just designed with a different purpose in mind. (Benelli does make a couple of models specifically desighned for clay games and are absolutley outstanding choices) This is one of the reasons why the 390/391's dominate clay games. They will cycle any ammo you run through them .Another reason for the popularity is recoil. Inertia/recoil operated shotgun's will and do recoil more than gas guns, That is a fact no one can argue. I have a 16 ga Browning A-5 that will beat the living crap out of your shoulder. However the gas piston operated 390/391 in 12 ga does not even need a recoil pad. As a matter of fact, the Walmart Beretta 390 wasn't even sold with one. I will admit though, that mine does have a pad and im glad it's there. The one area where i can say that both the Beretta's and Benelli shotguns really shine is they hardly ever "need" to be cleaned. I clean mine because i feel guilty about it and the Benelli is no different. All of these shotguns are adjustable for cast and drop which is nice for all shooters looking for a good fitting shotgun, especially sothpaws.
