Well, its time to purchase my first shotgun and have enlisted the help of you guys.  I want to keep it as cheap as possible.  Id like a 12 ga.  maybe a 20 at the least.  Regardless, main uses would be for plinking, clay shooting, and very rarely, hunting.  Do you really think it is worth it if I only shoot about once or twice a year?  If so, post your suggestions.  I am thinking about an 870 express like the one seen here:  http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/hunting/firearms/shotguns&start=0&zoom=1&selectedSKU=09+REMINGTON+870+SHURSHOT+PUMP+SHOTGUN

What are your opinions, do I need one, which one, how much?  Thanks!

An 870 is a great choice. I'd go with a 12 ga.

If you shop around, you can probably find a used 870 in great shape for cheaper than $200.

Clays are a lot of fun, plus there are other things (like 3-gun) that you can do with a shotgun.

The 870 you are considering is an excellent choice. And yes, it is worth it even if you don't shoot often; compared to buying a hunting rifle you might use only a couple times a year, an 870 is much cheaper. Plus, you can shoot the clays you mentioned, use it for HD, keep in your vehicle, etc. Whatever works for you.

What are your opinions on the Stoeger 2000?  I might end up getting an extended mag tube, shorter barrel, and other tactical goodies for when its not in a "field configuration".

I would go with an Mossberg 500, or a Remington 870, both are very reliable, and very common, easy to find parts, and add-ons if wanted, used you can usually find a Mossberg 500 or a 870 for around $200, not going to get much cheaper than that. I would not look past buying one used find one in good shape, there isn't really a lot that can go mechanically wrong.

If you are looking for a good reliable pump that  is easily upgraded and built up, it is real hard to go wrong with an 870. There are some really good deals to be found out there on used 870's.

I like the mossberg 500. Its relatively cheap and extremely reliable plus there is no latch that can catch your fingers when your load it. reguardless stick to either the 870 or the 500 they both are great guns

What barrel length would you say is best?  Would I be better off with a 20 ga. youth?  Im not a large guy.

Get a 12ga. The recoil isn't near as bad as people say it is (especially with proper handling and posture).

For HD, 18" or 20" is the usual. It helps you move around corners easier.

Field length for trap/skeet/birds would be 26"-30". Not saying you can't do it with a shorter barrel, its just easier with a longer barrel.

The 870 is my choice because of how easy it is to swap out barrels to fit any need that I have and put them in any configuration that I could dream up.
