I was out shooting some skeet today with my 18" 7 shot 870 Express and when I loaded it to capacity, after 2 shots the magazine spring simply stopped working.  I managed to get the rest of the ammo out by shaking the gun, but the spring and follower were jammed up inside the mag tube.  When I finally did get the spring free, it came down, follower and all, slamming the follower into the open end of the magazine with so much force that it will not move.

Is there anything that would cause the mag spring to just jam up like that?

And does anyone have advice for getting my magazine follower un-stuck?  The follower looks like http://www.wilsoncombat.com/sa_springs_followers.asp  I bought the gun used, and is it possible that this is an aftermarket follower?  I don't think Remington supplies Wilson Combat followers with their guns.

I've had a lot of problems with aftermarket followers in my Remington shotguns... I just run OEM followers now. They are plastic, so they wear over time, but replacements are only a couple of bucks and so I keep a few spares on hand.

The first thing I'd do is see if the mag extension is properly installed.  Sounds like it's not and the follower hung up.
