Installed a trigger assembly from a 870 3.5",
plastic frame,  into a 870 3" gun. The gun will not cock
the trigger when pumped??
Thanks in advance?

Its probably because of the different trigger assemblies. The super mag one is a little longer than the standard one.

Aren't the bolts/slide assemblies different as well?  It could be the slide assembly cannot go far enough to the rear?

Well the 3" trigger assembly works fine in the 3.5".
The 3.5 will cycle if I loosen the barrelslightly.

Yes. Everything is lengthened in the 3.5".

OP - Just put everything back onto the appropriate gun and it will work.

There has got to be a way...the 3" works fine
in the 3.5".

Does the bolt lock tightly into battery when you put the 3” trigger group in the 3.5” gun?

Set the 2 trigger groups side by side  (Line up the 2 trigger group pin holes) and you should see the differences in the two assemblies (specifically look at the action bar lock)

The question than begs to be asked...

Why do you want to swap these assemblies between guns that were not designed to allow such interchangeability?

Ended up aligning the assemblies together using the pins and noted
the differences, which were few. The action bars were slightly
different, so I changed the 3.5 to mimick the 3". Now they both
work interchangeably. I did this so I could keep the 3" trigger
assembly as it's a metal frame instead of the plastic frame that came
out of the 3.5. I'm going to trade the 3" off and didn't want to
lose the metal trigger assembly in the process.

Why? The polymer one is stronger and weighs less.

If you must know, I prefer metal to plastic and I've
had this particular assembly for quite a few 870's
and it's been well massged to my liking.
Thank you for comments and concerns...
