I was under the impression that all 870 Expresses came with polymer trigger guards. I just picked up a new 870 Express and it indeed has the polymer trigger guard, however my friend bought a used Express from a pawn shop (that thing is excellent by the way) and it has a metal trigger guard. I'm not worried about not having a metal trigger guard, but why is this? Thanks.

Polymer is less expensive to make and actually stronger.  Either way, they are great shotguns.

the older Express models used the cast metal trigger plate assemblies.   the Newer Express models and all the Tactical Models have the polymer trigger plate assemblies.   Yours is a new one, his is an older model.   You are better off with the Polymer as that is what I use in all my personal 870's.

The express has a plastic trigger guard. The wingmaster and police have a metal one if i'm not mistaken. If you want to know more just google for the difference between a wingmaster and an express.

Your buddies used express probably had the trigger guard switched out by the previous owner.

Zul -  the early model Express had the cast metal trigger plate assemblies just as I posted.   The guy that posted this has a new model and his buddy has an older model this is why the trigger plate assemblies are different.

I bought a 870 Express Super Magnum last Christmas and it had the metal trigger guard.Just bought a 20GA. Express and it has the plastic.I don't really care either way as long as the ISS thingy is gone. The good thing about the plastic is the finish doesn't come off.

Quoted for truth.  I took in a late 80s/early 90s Express on trade earlier this year from the original ower, and it had a metal trigger guard (barrel was cut down to 21", but that was the only mod).  You'll see J.D. has posted multiple times on this matter, and you will also see he uses the polymer trigger guard on his personal 870s even though he keeps a number of metal triggers in his shop.

Say, J.D., I'm gonna try and send you some pictures tonight on how my 870's coming along.  I just got it back from some custom work yesterday and am getting it engraved/refinished soon  Haven't seen any of those LH barrels, though.
