I have recently picked up a 1957 Model 37 that is in amazing shape, looks to have been rarely fired and taken care of.  I had the 28" barrel cut down to 18.5", and love it.

I put about 50 rounds of birdshot through it, and one time it locked up tight after firing.  Couldn't get the action to open, and the release lever and safety wouldn't move.  I ended up unloading it, and working on it, and finally it suddenly came loose as though there had been nothing wrong.   (I'm pretty sure this was with a #8 shot, low-walled round.)  Put another 25-30 rounds through it without a hitch.

Grabbed it yesterday to shoot a suspicious acting possum, and it did it again––twice.

Pumped in the first round, #4 shot, high-walled round, fired, and the action froze.  Went through the same process, and it finally came loose.

Loaded 3 rounds of 00 Buck, fired, action froze.  Unloaded, worked it, and it came loose.  Still have no idea what I did to free the action.

Although I have not had the chance to fire it again, the gun will cycle live rounds through it all day without a hitch.

Any ideas/help?

Without seeing the gun....

Sounds like the barrel chamber needs a light polish or honing. It may have a build up of gunk in the chamber that grabs onto the shell when it get heated up from firing.

Take it to your gunsmith :)
