ok so i'm wanting to buy a shotgun soon. i'd like to have the option to switch barrels so i can have a hunting gun and a home gun.
i like mossbergs, but i'm having trouble finding which models will give me the option. any input would be greatly appreciated (i'm not committed to mossberg...i just like what i've seen so far for the price). thanks |

500 barrels swap out pretty easily, and come in all sorts of lengths.
If you're looking at doing some waterfowling, you can buy an 835 and swap in a 590 barrel for HD (just don't use 3.5" shells with the 590 barrel). ETA: Remington's 870 barrels all swap out pretty much 1 for 1. |

Remington 870 beats Mossberg in modularity. If you need one shotgun that will do it all then get the 870. This is not to knock off Mossberg since I own a 500, and 590, but with Mossberg the one peice mag tube rules out mag extensions. +1 I vote 870 +1 870 For the win. |

If you're dead set on a Mossberg, a Maverick 88 will suffice - I believe they have the models that come with both barrels, and if it fails you can swap with like-length 500 tubes. HOWEVER, that said, I am a huge 870 fan and greatly prefer the family. I have a number of barrels, and 99.99% of 870s are interchangeable. The only exceptions to the 870 line are very rare to find (Special Field, MCS [Modular Combat System], and customs like Serbu/Safety Harbor). I throw that out as a disclaimer so no one can say I gave wrong info. Of the 4 exceptions, 3 are not available for non-NFA/non-LEO or .gov sales, and I spent 3 months trying to locate a Special Field barrel. You're safe with the 870.
Why the 870? You have barrels from 12" (NFA) up to 30". A barrel from 40 years ago will still fit a new model. Want to take a Wingmaster and put on a Police barrel? Done. Need a plug for hunting birds? Just drop it in. Want to go from 4+1 to 6+1 or more? 30 seconds to add the extension. How about a rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount? Remington's got it, too. Want to take that old Wingmaster and register as SBS? Too easy; Form 1, shorten, enjoy. Want to take your brand new Express and redo the furniture with synthetic, police, or Wingmaster wood? Plug & play. There's a lot of options out there. Think of the 870 as the BRD enabler of shotguns - you are limited solely by your imagination. |

Mossbergs and Remingtons are about the same in this regard actually. Slight edge to the Rem on the magazine design, but the Mossy control location is way superior, especially for a hunting gun. The only thing you really need to watch out for is if you get a 500 with an 8 round capacity instead of 6 as that can limit barrel choices a bit.
Mossberg sells combos to make it easy for you. BIg 5 usually has the 500 with an 18.5" and 28" barrel for $249, and you can get the 930 with several combos |

wow...thanks, everyone!
yeah the release on the remington isn't ideal, but i think the freedom of changing barrels and magazines could help get me over it. awesome. i think my in-laws are going to buy me a shotgun for my birthday...they are asking questions that i don't have answers for. until now! arfcom FTW:) |
