Posted this in the GD... It turned into a legal debate of people showing off their AOW, SBS, etc knowledge. ARFCOM strikes again
Lets see if any shotgun guys in here would play with it... ... The idea of a 12ga shotgun revolver has been bouncing through my head. Would anyone get it? It would be like a Taurus Judge, but with more balls. - It would have a rifled barrel - Chambered for some exotic round that hasn't been invented yet - Just happens to shoot 12ga shotgun shells - 5 round revolving cylinder - Ported barrel to help manage recoil and muzzle jump - Spongy squishy big grip (picture a limbsaver, but made into a revolver grip) - High visibility front and rear sights (make them a lot better than the Judge sights) The round that hasn't been invented yet would be like a Sabot slug, but bigger and encased in a full brass casing. The Taurus Judge is allowed to be sold without needing all the paperwork because it is a .45 LC revolver with a rifled barrel that can shoot .410 shotgun shells. This gun would be no different. It would be a revolver that shoots a round that hasn't been invented yet, but just happens to be able to shoot 12ga shotgun shells. Any takers? This would of course be for CCW |

Any metallic cartridge large enough to interchange with 12ga would most likely be considered a destructive device. Shotguns get a pass on the "over half-inch" rule, as do some grandfathered-in relic rounds (the .600 Nitro Express for example). Getting an exception for any new round (for the reasons you listed above) would be a very hard sell. |

The only reason the judge gets a pass is because the bore is .45. I am not saying it makes sense. The stryker and streetsweeper are both 12ga revolvers but they are in rifle form. ATF decided that they are too scary and had them re classified as destructive devices. |

The GD discussion
I think you're trying to design a DD Hendricks5150, and that's even worse than a SBS for user-friendly states. Sorry man. |

I'm just seeing if anyone would even think about picking up one. Just an interesting novelty/range toy

The Judge is classified as a .45LC revolver.... Once the 'pistol cartridge' gets bigger than 50cal, the gun is a DD.... However, if you didn't make the wierd pistol cartridge, then it would just be an AOW (pistol shotgun).... So, what if you kept the caliber at .50, but made the round hold a plastic wad around the sabot slug. Thus keeping it at .50cal bullet. Or would the bore being bigger than 1/2 inch make it a DD automatically, even if the round held a plastic wad which held in place the sabot slug? |
