I am curious what company makes a full replacement extended magazine. I have heard the horror stories of buying extensions and having to Dremel out the end of the magazine to allow for the shells to pass through leaving bare metal to the elements I'd rather not do that

Everyone does it it will be ok. Just keep some paint on it. Or just by one with a factory installed extension.

There's a sticky on this here

It's not a matter of extensions, it's a matter of factory magazine tubes.  The newer express models have 2 dimples and a special plug to keep the spring in place.  When you remove the dimples, you need to also replace the plastic retainer with a sub-$4 cap like this.  It can be a painless or excruciatingly painful process.  Just take you time, read the stick or ideas, and you should be good to go.

YMMV

I drilled out mine with a drill bit and used a screwdriver to knock off the burrs... It works great

Edit: You have to get a new follower??? Haha, I must be an enigma then because I got it to work with the old follower

As above, when you're dealing with the Remington 870 Express, you MUST alter the guns magazine tube to allow the extra shells to be fed into the extension.
The "dimples" must be removed to allow the extension to work, but there is no "bare metal" exposed.
The removal requires drilling two holes and these are completely covered by the barrel support ring when the gun is assembled.

If you don't like the idea of drilling holes, there are ways to press and "iron" the dimples out, but this is harder and requires some tooling.

As for the magazine spring retainer linked above, this is NOT needed for a gun with an extension.
You'd need that retainer only if you wanted to convert back to a standard 4 shot magazine configuration.

As for extensions, the Remington factory is the best, but prices are around $100.
A "best buy" is the Choate.  It's been made longer than anyone else's other than Remington, is high quality, and comes as a complete kit with everything you need, including a barrel clamp and sling swivel.
You can buy the Choate at Brownell's and direct from Choate.

Last, if you buy a Wingmaster or Police model no alterations to the gun are needed to install an extension.
Only the Express models need alteration.
