When I go to the fireing position with my cheek on the stock, my head doesn't seem to naturally align perfectly with the bead. Is there a shimmy or something that will drop the stock a tad bit?

Any ideas?

What stock are you using? Factory? What do you mean by a shim? Mesa Tactical makes a bunch of stock adapters that may change the geometry of the stock. Is your line of site too high? Low?

Factory stock

Like a piece of plastic/metal that will angle the stock different so I will get a more immediate target sight with zero head adjusting.

My head sits a little too high. I have to really push my head down to get the bead lined up right. I can get it lined up right, but it isn't immediate sight picture. I have to press my cheek down hard, its a bitch with heavier loads cause i get a hell of a slap in the face.

I was thinking that the sling attachment for 870 (the one that fits behind the receiver) might help drop the stock enough.

Please don't take this as an insult... but are you holding the shotgun properly?  Is it firmly seated in the pocket of your shoulder?  One of my cousins couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside with a shotgun, then we discovered he had horrible shoulder weld, and *poof*!  He shot better and was no longer getting slapped.

I have a Mesa LEO stock adapter on one of my 870s, and I feel like it actually brought the stock up a little bit.  I haven't ruin it side by side with a wood stock, PM me is a week or so when my new shotgun gets here and I can provide you more info.  You may want to see if one of the more downward angled stocks, i.e. Knoxx, works better for you.  You could also see if something small like a GG&G sling plate adapter moves it into the right place for you; they add a negligible distance to the stock length, so it may shift the angle.

Lastly, I don't know how you could change the angle of the stock with a factory stock.  The bolt has a decently long channel in the stock, so you may have to have a stock completely custom made for you.  I wouldn't even know where to tell you to start looking on that.  You might be able to get a cheap synthetic set (try here Sportsman's Guide, $40) and see if you can't dremel, cut, and mold it into place for your needs.

Hope this helps.  Keep us posted if you resolve the issue.

Actually the Knoxx specops stock raises you up even more and is not ideal for a bead sight.  That's why I ditched mine.

OP - If you would consider a pistol grip stock, I have a Choate Mark IV stock that has the perfect drop on it.  It also has a great recoil pad, you might want to try one because it definitely gets you down lower than a factory dimension stock.  You can get them at MidwayUSA.

None taken

Yep, I am shouldering the shotgun correctly. It just seems like the stock could be angled down just a little bit and it would fit perfect. The length is great, just the stock seems a hair too high for me. Maybe I can try to make some sort of wood insert to go between the stock and the receiver to lower the stock a tad.

I only get slapped when I'm shooting the 3.5" magnums, never any other load

Can you take a pic of yourself with the shotgun mounted?

This is the best I could do by myself. I tried to shoulder the gun and take the pic, the butt might have slipped down a little from where it normally sits. Its a little awkward trying to hold up my shotgun while shouldered and take a pic

My head just sits a tad too high. I can probably fix it by doing shouldering practice every day AM and PM until my muscles memorize it perfectly.

Try bringing the gun up into your line of sight instead of bringing your head down to the gun.

I'll try that next time I have it out.

I usually like to keep all of the butt firmly in my shoulder for fear that the gun will fly off my shoulder when shooting those heavy magnum loads
