well a buddy of mine just aquired a Mossberg 500ATP, and he wants to sell it to me to fund another firearm. the gun is suposely 17 years old. the gun LOOKS to be in perfect condition, minus a few scratches. havent shot it yet, i plan on doing this wednesday before i buy it. so my question is what would be a good price for it?

-wood furniture
-18.5 barrel
-bead front sight
-4 +1 capacity

$125-150.  If he tried to trade it in somewhere, he would likely get $75.

any idea if this is a good shotgun?

and also, why is it that a shotgun only comes shortest in a "18.5 bbl? would it be a SBS if it were chopped down to "16?

18" is the minimum legal for shotguns.  Most manufacturers keep it at 18.5" to be safe.

Anything shorter than 18" requires a tax stamp.

ETA: 16" is the minimum for rifles.  It can be a bit confusing.

Yes, it is an excellent shotgun.  The Mossberg has a number of features that make it a better design than the Remington 870 (ambidextrous safety, slide latch position, replaceable extractor, easier loading port access).  However, Mossberg's execution can be lacking sometimes.  If it looks good, buy it.  By the way, capacity is 5+1, not 4+1.

oh, i guess i miscounted when i was loading shells to see the capacity.

i went ahead and bought it. paid $130 for it.

i dont think im going to do anything crazy with it, except maybe add a SureFire foregrip and maybe some sort of nightsights.
