I looked at some Remington 870s today and wondered if someone could answer a question or two. I know of four current rollmarks: REMINGTON 870 EXPRESS REMINGTON 870 POLICE REMINGTON 870 WINGMASTER REMINGTON 870 TACTICAL Today I saw a home defense 7 shot model with the new style stocks. It was roll marked: REMINGTON 870. It had no express, tactical, or police marking. Are all the HD models losing the express logo? Also, beside it was the 7 shot tactical breacher. It was also new but had the old checkered stocks and was marked "REMINGTON 870 TACTICAL". Can you buy just the rem-choked 18.5" barrel seperately anywhere? |
| Read this sticky for details on differences between Express, Police, and Wingmaster. It leaves out Tactical, which is more or less a rebranded Express but Tacticals usually come with more "Police-like" features like drilled and tapped receivers, short-length forearms for easy unloading, mag extension, and more stock options. Police models are rather rare in commercial retial channels. |

I understand the differences between the police, wingmaster, tactical, express, marine magnum and so on. I just wanted to know if any of you guys had any insite on why the new HD model I saw today was simply roll marked REMINGTON 870 with no Express or anything else after that. I just wanted to know if the Express name was dying off or only going on the field model value guns. |

From what I have seen in stores newer 26-28 inch 870's as well as the 7 shot HD model are marked "Remington 870" They are still the Express line (Matte blue finish, synthetic trigger group, internal ratcheting barrel cap) they just dont appear to be marked "express" You will find "Remington 870 Tactical" marked on shotguns like the desert recon and a few others that come with the 18.5 inch Rem-Choke barrel. You can get the 18.5 inch Rem-Choke barrel from Remington #401767 556A2 who posts here has one and gave me the part number. |
good to know...I want to get a shorter barrel for mine |

Well, I went out to the local Wally World and sure enough the 26" wood stock 870 was simply marked "REMINGTON 870". It had no express or magnum on it. It looks as though Remington knows the Express name has worn out its welcome and is synonomus with cheapness. Now I want another 870 that isn't marked express. |

Remington has LONG played around with 870 receiver stamps. Years ago, the Police model was stamped simply as a Wingmaster. About the time the Express came out, they started adding the Police stamp to prevent mistaken identity with the shorter Express model. The early Express with the 18" barrel was stamped as "Magnum HD" or Home Defense, then recently the HD stamp was dropped. People are again asking the difference between an 870 and a "Magnum" 870. Remington is apparently no longer stamping Magnum guns as Magnum, since they make few 2 3/4" chambered guns now. So, this is nothing more than Remington shuffling around stamps again. People will continue to be confused as to what all these stamps mean. |
