The safety on my mossberg seems broken. When I rack the slide of my shotgun to load a shell this knocks the safety into the safe position. How do I fix this?

Sometimes you can tighten it, but most likely you will have to replace the detent ball, spring and plate, maybe the safety too if yours is the old plastic type.

I just replaced the safety assembly so it is all new parts. I'll try to tighten it and will update with my status. Thanks for the advice.

It's still doing it. When the slide hits the back position it seems to be forcing the safety into the safe position. Any other ideas?

Sounds like the plate is in backwards??Maybe?

I'll have to check when I can find my wrench to get the stock off.

once before I knew better, I put the safety block in backwards. Talk about messing up my day of shooting.  Now I bring tools and cleaning kits.  I also once had the stock bolt go in to far and it hit the safety preventing movement.

I had the same exact thing happen to mine. I then had a gunsmith replace the plastic safety with a wider aluminum upgraded safety. Took it back to the range and had the same malfunction. I now have it torn apart and think I have diagnosed the problem. The only thing that didn't look right was the safety spring was slightly bent possibly causing weak spring pressure.

I am planning on ordering a new spring.

And detent plate for good measure.

I am about 90% sure this will fix my problem and hope this helps.
good luck with yours.

I would replace it with a Vang Safety. It comes with everything you need for a trouble free safety.

I have been told that when you are having the problem a Mossberg safety slipping you will need to drill out the holes in the metal plate a "little" so they will engage the detent ball better. That will keep it from slipping.

Here is a good link on repairing Mossberg safeties. It doesn't provide any info on your problem but it is still provides some good info.
