Hi, my friend and i are getting into skeet, he just bought a Remington 1100. I'm very competitive, at the moment im just using my friends shotguns and changing guns throws off my groove.

My practical side says to go with a entry level over and under, or entry semi auto.

However, i love the look of tactical shotguns. I understand a Saiga 12 probably wouldnt be the best for skeet, but are there other tactical shotguns out there that could work for skeet as well?

Remington model 1100 TAC-2?

Will the shorter barrel length destroy my sight radius therefore accuracy? I like tactical shotguns but the main goal is to get a higher score than he does.

Thanks

I would imagine that you could get yourself the 1100 and just change the barrel to a longer length for skeet.

Are you shooting skeet on a regulation field or hand thrown informal clays?

Why wouldnt the siaga 12 be good for skeet.

My buddies and I always shoot informal clays tossed from a thrower with a mossberg 500 18.5 cyl. bore and GRS and a 19 inch siaga 12. They both work well for this.

I'm shooting regulation skeet, probably never from a hand thrown.

A Saiga 12g would be the correct pattern/choke for regulation skeet  you say?

And "it could be done" vs. "it will work fine" are very different. Given my skill level the last thing i need is to be hindered further by the wrong tool for the job.

Thanks for the input though

If you are shooting regulation skeet you should not buy a defensive style shotgun. It really comes down to what is your budget.

Remington 1100 800 or less

Beretta 391 1600 or so

Don't buy a Benelli =  recoil operated you want gas operated

If you plan to shoot all four guns, 12, 20, 28 and 410,  some day you should look at a O/U.

Browning 2500 or so plus tubes

Beretta 3500 or so plus tubes

If you are med height you will want a 28" barrel on a auto or a 30" barrel on a O/U.

Short barrel guns like the Saiga are fine to use as carbines or hand thrown birds. But to shoot sustained lead in skeet you will need a longer barrel.

Why would you say no to the Benelli???  The kick??  I use a Benelli for trap / skeet / and sporting clays.  Benelli shotguns will come with 5 choke tubes which will be more than enough for trap and skeet.  The M2 would make a fine semi auto skeet gun, but the Benelli Super Sport would make a better choice.

I've shot trap with a Winchester M12 Trap and a Ruger Red Label and both kicked like a mule.  The Benelli M1 with trap and skeet loads is pretty tame, the Benelli M2 will kick even less.

I say if you want an over under get a Browning or Beretta ( I like the price of the Browning)

If you want semi auto get want ever you want but don't pass up the Benelli.  Look into Browning, Beretta, Benelli and Remington.

Of couse if want a Practical/Tactical shotgun you should look into the Benelli M1 Practical Tactical.  26" barrel, ghost ring sights, rail, and 9 shot tube.

I am second to no man in my admiration of the Benelli shotgun but.........recoil operated gets old after hundreds of shotshells.

I'm not the only person who thinks that is true just visit a skeet field and count the recoil operated guns compared to the gas operated guns.

Yes the Benelli would work, but a gas gun would be better.

Go ahead and use the Saiga 12. I had no issues doing skeet with mine, worked rather well. The 8 round magazine looked a little odd though. And the range owners jaw hit the floor when I did a 6 round string, hit the button until 6 clays were in the air then went a busted them all before they hit the ground. If patterns concern you then just have the end threaded for Remington chokes and pattern it with different chokes until you are satisfied.
