I bought a 500 and the barrel screws into the shell tube. Is it possible to put a +2 tube on this or won't it work with this model?

With a mossberg 500, if you want more capacity, you have to replace the magazine tube AND the barrel with different parts---and that's assuming they were ever made.

Thanks I think I'll just leave it as is. Mossberg = FAIL

Is there a way to tell when a gun was made? maybe by serial number?

Not sure I understand how Mossberg fails here when capacity issues could easily have been considered before you bought the 500 model?

E-mail Service at Mossberg [email protected] with the serial number and they will give you the year of manufacture in a day or two.

or the rare (but available) 500 extended mag model.

Not Doing Your HOMEWORK, does not equal Mossberg = FAIL

You can buy a repalcement mag tube and 20" barrel off of Brownells if you have to have. They have even made it into a package so its easy enough for the haters to order.

I have a 870 that I love so this was just for a extra but after taking apart both guns I definitely prefer my 870. This mossberg will make a great apt. gun though.

Should have looked at a 590. The 500 was probably a "good deal"

Being greedy and taking the "good deal" = FAIL!!!

I'm not really familiar with the Mossberg 500's, but just picked up my first 590A1 (18.5").

There is a fellow by the name of MAX100 who makes +2 extensions over at the shotgunworld forums.

My 590A1 barrel slides over the shell tube and is held in place by an end cap. This +2 extension replaces the end cap and fits flush with the end of the barrel.

This is not my pic, but you can see the knurled part that screws on to replace the mag cap:

MAX100:  Here is what one of my +2 tubes looks like on a Mossberg 590A1 with a 18.5". They are 4.25" long. The 835, 500 MilsGun, 500 tactical breacher and the 590A1 18.5" barrel all have the same mag tube setup.

Rare? Must be an Illinois thing. The stores down here have more 8-shot 500s than standard capacity ones.

That's what I was thinking.  Back in the day (before the 590), they were abundant down here.

Heck, I still have one gathering dust somewhere.
