Pardon me for being a little stupid on this one but I have a question for the shotgun gurus of ARFCOM I've got my 870 all ready to go for turkey season which opens up on the 15th Super Full Turkey Choke and a 3" Load that shoots good in my gun, ready to rock and roll My question lies in the fact that Spring Bear season opens the same day...now most likely i'll be packing my .357 with me, but my question is..... If I see a bear, and have time to unscrew my choke, and then jack in a slug and take a shot, what will happen? Am I going to screw up the threads in the end of the barrel? Will my accuracy be shit? Might I actually hit a bear say at 50 yards away? I haven't tried shooting slugs with this method for fear of doing negative things to my barrel or am I just being too paranoid? Any help would be much appreciated Thanks! |

It would destroy the threads, and you would have little to no accuracy. My recommendation is to buy & carry extended choke tubes. That way in the field you can unscrew the choke tube quickly without tools. That way you can switch chokes in as little as 10 seconds. |
It is too tight, probably won't split on you but will severely lead-up the choke. Accuracy will be poop too. |

The only thing that makes it a hard call is the super full choke. Most all slugs shoot just fine through a normal full choke. If you really wanted to know you could measure the actual diameter of the slug and choke. That will tell you whether or not it will work. |

Why not just use a modified or a full choke? I killed my first turkey from about 20 yards with a cyl bore 16ga SxS when I was 13. Killed plenty of other turkey since then too with a modified choke. You loose a few yards on the high end of the range of the shotgun but that makes it more fun anyhow since they get closer. CMS |
