Have an 870 rem 12ga shotgun ,Can someone run me threw how to get the forend off ,THANKS .Replacing it with tactical one .

There's a tool. Brownell's and other places have it. Years ago, when I was poor and had lots of time on my hands, I made one out of a piece of pipe. It takes a while to file/cut out everything that doesn't fit in those slots . . .  Here's a more or less universal forend wrench. The 870-specific wrenches usually cost more. |
You're talking about taking the magazine tube cap off, right? Taking the cap off doesn't allow you to remove the handguard. It only allows you to remove the barrel. There's a metal ring that holds the handguard on. You've got to have a special spanner to remove that. |
Verify shotgun is unloaded After you take the mag tube cap off, you reach in the the bottom of the receiver and depress the left side bolt catch with your finger, then pull slide assembly off. The bolt and carrier plate will come out also At the front end of the wood forearm is a ring with 2 slots in it, you need a spanner key, or some type of metal that will span the 2 slots and still allow you to turn it. Righty tighty, lefty-loosey and there you go. Putting it back tohether is a biotch!, You have to get the bolt and carrier plate set up, and then dpress the right release while sliding it all back into the receiver, then press the left release and cuss alot. Why do you need to take the slide assembly off? I've never done that to change the handguard. |
Nope, with the end cap off and the barrel removed, slide the forearm, action arms and the bolt out of the receiver. This will give you access to the forearm nut. Place the silver dollar into the slots and turn. Wala and it cost you nothing! |

FWIW, I have an older 870 with a law enforcement type forend. Gunsmith tools last a lifetime. You'll use them again and a again. You can never have too many tools. ETA: BRAIN FART. I looked. I was wrong. I still think the tool is the right way to go, though. |

I made a tool from a cheap stamped wal-mart sparkplug wrench. Take the end that fits inside the handguard area, drill a hole across both sides of it. Make a cross pin from a steel rod that covers both notches on the nut. Inset the pin the the holes you drilled, place it down inside, and use the sparkplug wrenches included cross piece to remove or install the nut. Of course you have to have remove the carrier assembly for this very cheap tool to work. But if you can't do that then you shouldn't be working on your own guns anyway
