i bought an 870 express a few months ago for a beater shotgun. ive had a wingmaster in the past so knew i would like it. however, after the first skeet day i put it back in a cloth case without wiping it down. i opened the bag a couple weeks later and my receiver was orange! i brushed and cleaned all the rust off and drenched the entire gun with clp hoping to not have the same problem in the future. well a month later i open it back up and there is some more rust. not as bad as the first time but still enough to piss me off. im thinking there must be moisture in the case that i cant get rid of or something. but anyway whats the deal with this? ive never had any gun ive owned rust like this thing including the wingmaster. are the express' more likely to rust than the wingmasters or polices? if i didnt completely get 100% of the rust off the first time i cleaned, is it more likely to keep rusting? do i need to use something other than clp?

I just said screw it and sent mine off to Bobby at Salbo Arms.
He bead blasted, parked and gun-koted mine in a custom two tone finish...guess what NEVER rusts now?
I forget what it cost me, but if i do another 870 that will be the first thing I do once I get it home.

I have mine stored in a bag too and it had surface rust on it when I opened it up last summer.  After wiping it off, I threw in a dessicant bag with the gun when I stored it again.  So far it has worked but then again, it won't be humid here until next summer.

Cloth and Foam cases usually will trap moisture which can/will lead to rust. Your best option is to use it to carry your 870 to the range, and remove it when you get home.

The 870 Express is known to rust, but it is preventable. Take some CLP, and put it on the 870 until it almost dripping off. Let it sit for 30 minutes or so, and wipe the excess off. I did this every 1-2 months, and I never had any rust related issues with my Express.

As above, NEVER store a gun in a cloth or leather case.  These trap moisture and will rust any gun.

Also, soaking, inside and out, with CLP Breakfree will prevent rust.
Every time you shoot or handle the gun, use a patch to apply a layer of CLP.
This will build up a protective layer of Teflon and will prevent rust.

SHAKE THE BOTTLE.

Use one of those cheap silicone coated gun sacks. The 4 years that I lived in Florida I never had any rust even after not cleaning the gun for a while. I swear by them. Haven't had any rust on any of my firearms since I started using them. Give it a try they are only $4-$6. That way you don't have oil dripping everywhere too.

ETA: Of course this is after you get rid of the rust you already have/had.
