For those of you who have installed and do use the forearm light on your pump shotguns, how does the pumping action affect the illuminated area? Does the light tend to shake around during the pump or does the area remain fairly well lit? (This all of course being a large concern during actual low light shooting with repeated pumping.)

I would hazard a guess that between the recoil of the shotgun and the pumping movement (not to mention and muzzle blast partially night blinding the shooter) the light does has the propensity to move around leaving the shooter to take a moment to re-acquire the target?

Theoretically then, the flashlight's lit area should remain more constant with a semi-auto shotgun than with a pump gun?

Or does anyone ever do enough low light shotgun shooting for this to be a critical issue?

Comments?

Just wondering.

I have shot alot  in the dark with my 870 and a surefire forend, the light does move , but not too bad. I don't aim with a light. I aim with the sights and use the light to ID. Using the light if I put the center of the light ont he target that is about where the pattern center is and slugs will be COM hits.

Momentary switch.  Flash and shoot.  It can be unhealthy to run around with the light on all the time.
As has been said, you only use the light for ID.

It moves, but most lights have a pretty broad spread of output and targets stay in that spread.

If you are racking it that would mean you just shot at a threat. If that is the case you need the light to ascertain the status of the threat for follow up shots.

That being said, tactics are situational and very subjective.

To the OP I wouldn't worry about the difference between a pump and a semi.

Understood, but it isn't my habit to keep the light on.  Shoot, operate the slide, and then flash again.
Obviously in total darkness that might be different.
