Just picked-up a used M3 with an AT (88) date code (no 922r issues). Serial # is 066xxx. I had a couple of questions for the experts.

Is there any problems with the older models I should be aware of?

I figured out the 7+1+1 loading, but what is the purpose of the little silver latch that releases a round onto the loader lifter? Why would you want to release a round into this area?  Basically, what don't I understand about this feature?

It has the 1 piece 7 round tube. Does this tube unscrew from the receiver to replace the mag. tube spring? Or is there an easier way?

Thanks.

The extra round is a feature so your gun has 8+ 1 shots. Benellis are all reliable thats why special forces use them and alot of swat teams as well. THey dont have problems unless you start replacing parts with aftermarket crap- same goes for Glocks. The instant you start replacing factory parts is when you get into unreliable territory. Happy shotgunning.

Not that I know of.

I dunno.  I never really thought about that come to think of it.  I normally load my M1S90 by locking the bolt to the rear, dropping a shell into the ejection port and dropping the bolt.  I put the safety on then fill the magazine tube up.

Yes, the magazine tube just unscrews from the receiver.  There's no other way to get the spring out unfortunately.  Take care when unscrewing the tube, the mag spring is pretty stout.

Thanks.
