The factory stock on my Mossberg 500 is too long.

I like the telestock on my AR. And from what I've been able to gather, a pistol grip + shoulder stock on a shotgun helps. The telestock appeals as it's adjustable, and I'm short.

The three brands I've been able to find are ATI, Knoxx and Mesa.

Opinions on those?

Other suggestions?

i put the ati stock on my mossberg 500  because it was cheap and it does the job. if it break ill just get another one or buy a higher quality one.

On a Mossberg 500, I'd stick with a "conventional" stock. It makes the safety easier to get to. I have the pistol grip cruiser and wish I had the SpeedFeed pistol grip, wich is "level of plain" like a regular hunting stock. I had an AR15 stock/grip on my 500 and took it of over the weekend.

Wouldn't the SpeedFeed pistol grip/stock have the same problem of taking your thumb away from the safety?

For me, it's really the length issue more than the pistol vs. traditional grip; though I do favor the former.

ShortMan - did you find that the ATI was a solid match-up to your 500? Any issues with fit or wiggle so far?

Not to slam the ATI, but it really doesn't compare to this:

Yeah, I'm looking pretty seriously at the Knoxx stock. This, however, gives me some pause:

height=8
NOTE: Shooters with Surefire® Forends installed on their shotguns may experience sharp recoil on their weak hand against the lamp housing. This is due to the rearward movement of the shotgun over the pistol grip. We recommend that you hold the forend at least 1.5 inches back from the lamp housing to avoid this painful action.

'rearward movement of the shotgun over the pistol grip'? So the grip remains relatively static, and the receiver moves backwards? I'm confused...

Supposedly the receiver does move back 1" - 2". Several people using SureFire forends have commented on this phenomenon.

Knoxx is supposed to be working on a light/forend combination to address this problem. Once it's introduced, if it looks good I'm probably going to pick one up to use in conjunction with their standard (non PG) Compstock. For now, I'm holding off on a light purchase to see what they come up with.

Look at the price difference that says it all.

I have the ATI and I like it but the cheek rest on it is higher than the standard but stock.

Huh. This may be a spectacularly ignorant question, but wouldn't the trigger and guard move with the receiver? I measured on my 500, and 1-2" of travel would be pretty close to my index finger becoming a bit...pinched. And I've got small fingers. I've tried to watch on the video, but the slo-mo isn't of good enough quality for me to tell what's going on with the trigger guard.

I have to agree the ATI stock seems quite a bit higher than a factory buttstock. It would probably work well with a red dot etc.  It still has the issue of making the safety hard to reach though.
Jimmy,if you`ve got a PGO on a Mossberg 500 you should take a hard look at the Pachmayr Vindicator pistol grip. It has no hump behind the reciever and the safety is really easy to reach.  It has a similar grip angle to the factory pistol grip so it`s easy to shoot from eye level as well as from the hip. The rubber construction and air chamber at the back of the grip soak up recoil really well too. No pain at all even with slugs. MadMarcus

If you are using the 500 for home defense or compitition look hard at the issue of the safety grip interaction. With a pistol grip stock you have take you hand out of a firing position to operate the safety, then regrip to operate the trigger.

I personal would stay away from the combination. Knoxx does make a conventional stock that might be worth a look.

The best fix may be to go to your local smith and have him fit your current stock to you. I am in the process of doing the same currently, While I'm at it I'm going to a recoil reducer from Edwards.

I have a Knoxx Specops on my Winchester 1300 and a Surefire Forend as well - all you have to do is remember to place your hand back from the lamp housing. It's not really a problem at all unless you have gorilla length arms.

How about a short hogue stock? I have a Mossberg 500 mariner fitted with one of these and its just right for me. Here's a link.

I forgot the Calvery Arms tele stock. They have a special safety to go with them that may help with the safety "problem" I mentioned:

DMR, thanks for the heads-up on the Cavalry Arms stock. It looks good, but I'm not able to put optics on it yet, and the trigger reach is probably going to make it a no-go. That safety, though, may factor in with other pistol grip ideas...
