I have owned a great many shotguns over the years.  All have been "hunting" type guns.  I recently acquired a Mossberg 500A 12 gauge.  Black synthetic furniture.  28" vent rib barrel.  Decided to try my hand at a "tactical/HD" type build with it.  First thing I ordered a 18.5" cyl bore barrel from Mossberg.  It came in friday and I went home and put it on the gun.  Fired some Federal 7 1/2 shot target loads through it and function was good.  Picked up some more ammo saturday.  Came home and loaded it with Winchester 3 inch magnum 00 buck shot.  Fired 5 rounds at a rate approaching rapid fire.  Now I am not what I would term recoil sensitive having fired many large bore guns in the past but I will say that I have never been kicked like this gun kicked me.  3 inch magnums may not be the way to go with this package.  That is the first thing I learned.  The second thing I learned is that the TAP 2 3/4 inch buckshot is much more manageable out of this gun.  Nowhere near the recoil and punishment.  The third thing I learned is don't come in from shooting and complain to wife about shoulder hurting.  I got no sympathy.  I look forward to working with this gun more and hopefully doing some 3-gun with it in the future.

Just thought I would throw this out and see what kind of feedback I get.

I have no need for 3" shells in my defenses/offense shotgun.  2.75" is plenty.

If your on the receiving end, it really does not matter if there are 9 .33 caliber pellets approaching you or if there are 12. Like my father always said, it's like getting hit by a train going 50 mph versus 40 mph.

3" magnum loads are for goose hunting.  They serve no purpose on a defensive gun.

Can you put an extended tube on a 500?

Unfortunately not. You can buy an 8 shot Mossberg, or buy an 8 shot Mossberg barrel and a new 8 shot magazine tube. That's one reason the 870 is more versatile.

Causey is correct, no mag ext.  I have ordered the Knoxx stock and a few more goodies including a light mount.  When I get the Knoxx and misc stuff I will post a picture.  Like I say this is my first project shotgun.   I have an 870 but I got the mossberg really cheap in order to screw around with it.

As others have posted I now realize that the 3" magnum loads are just not suitable for this gun or rather for me shooting in this gun.

It is amazing the difference in the fullhouse loads and the 2.75" Hornady TAP buckshot.

So it's a 6 round gun? If you are planning on getting into IPSC 3 gun you will be way behind the ammo curve with this gun during the shotgun portions. The shotgun stages usually come down to reloading not shooting. With this gun you will be at least 3 rounds behind on every stage. meaning you will have to reload at least 3 more shells than everyone else.

I'll 2nd this remark
as a new 3gun shooter, I shoot a shotgun real well.
I don't reload worth $hit.
My wife and I got crushed at the shotgun stage at the last match.  It took most people 40 to 70 seconds.  It took me 160 seconds and her even longer.  (she missed with some slugs, killed her, you don't shoot slugs at clays)

We've since built some dummy rounds to practice loading and loading.

But yeah, capicity is key.  Not missing helps too.

After reading these 2 posts I guess I can add something to what I have learned.  May need to look into a larger capacity shotgun if I plan to get into 3-gun.  That never really occured to me.  I haven't done any 3-gun, a buddy of mine mentioned to me that they have a local monthly shoot and that I should try it out.  I assume that 8 rds capacity is the least I would want.
