Can someone please explain to me what the different chokes are and why you would choose one over the other? I'm new to shotties and don't quite understand what the deal is. Also, a brief description on chambering would help too...like what the advantages/disadvantages of the 3" vs 2 3/4". Thx |

1. Improved Choke or cylinder bore is gaoing to give the greatest expansion of shot pellets after leaving the barrel i.e. large pattern. Also used with slugs, good for self defense and most common. 2. Modified Choke which has medium sized pattern best for waterfowl and upland birds. 3. Improved Modified also used for upland bird and watererfowl tighter pattern than Modified, but less than full 4. Full Choke tightest pattern available used for shooting, small-medium game, foxes, coyote. 2 3/4" shells don't have as much powder and there for not as much power 3" magnum, but you can also put more 2 3/4" into some of the larger magazines. Also 2 3/4" cheaper than 3" magnum. I use mostly 2 3/4 inch lead when shooting upland but then go to 3" magnum steel when shooting waterfowl, because steel isn't as heavy as lead and there for not as much power when it gets out several yards. Although they do make some new shells with heavier metals now, that are approved for waterfowl. They also have 3 1/2in magnum now for 12 ga. which I use goose hunting, and usually as the last shot in the magazine for waterfowl hunting. |
