My favorite local funshop has one for sale...kind of neat looking firearm. Anyone use one of these as a HD gun? Pro's and cons? It's got a 28" barrel (guessing...) should I have it cut down or are replacements available?

The Remmy 11 is an inch-pattern Auto-5. On the good side: a level of reliability even the vaunted Benelli works hard to match. On the bad side: stout recoil and a lack of spare parts. If something breaks you might be able to find a good gunsmith who can make a Browning part fit.

The mag tube threads are the same size and pitch as 1100-11/87 threads, but the tube is longer forward of the handguard. You can extend the magazine capacity by either trimming back the Rem 11 tube until the 1100 extension locks in place, or get a buddy with a lathe to machine a ring to fill the gap.

Cutting the barrel is not a problem, it is just barrel steel. You could get it reamed for screw-in chokes, but by then you'd be past the cost of a new 11/87.

Cheap enough, and tested for reliability, the Rem 11 is an entirely suitable choice for HD.

Jeremy,

Could you give some info how you got that extended tube on there?

I have a Remington 11 Riot model and that would be fun with that tube.

That's a standard 1100 magazine extension tube. The threading is similar enough that the extension just screws right on.

On the Model 11, however, the threaded portion for the end cap is longer than on an 1100. The extension tube bottoms out before the shoulder of the threaded ring on the extension tube contacts the handguard, thus holding it in place. I made a thick washer/spacer out of delrin that is approximately 1/4" thick and takes up the gap nicely.

That's slick, Jeremy! I have a Model 11 in 12 gauge, and will be inheriting another (my grandfather's) and a 20 gauge (Dad's). I picked up mine because $200 seemed tough to beat, and that way I'd have one to shoot and learn about for now. Grandpa's gone, now, but my aunt and uncle have his shotgun for now. Dad still has his, but he hasn't shot it in some years.

I think I'll be taking mine to the skeet range tomorrow, to see how she does.

I need to practice more with this one. Recoil wasn't bad, but if I had been shooting for shite, I wouldn'ta gotten a whiff.
